Biography

Short Description

Antonin Bajewski was a Polish priest of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual and one of the Catholic martyrs of the German occupation of Poland during the Second World War. He was born Jan Bajewski on 17 January 1915 in Vilnius (known in Polish as Wilno), a city then belonging to the Russian Empire and home to a large Polish population. Raised in a Polish Catholic milieu, he entered the Conventual Franciscans as a young man in the 1930s and received the religious name Antonin. He completed the usual course of novitiate, philosophical, and theological studies required by the order and was ordained to the priesthood in 1939, shortly before the September campaign that destroyed the Second Polish Republic.

The newly ordained friar was sent to Niepokalanów, the large Conventual Franciscan monastery west of Warsaw that Saint Maximilian Kolbe had developed into a major center of Marian devotion, religious publishing, and vocational formation. At Niepokalanów Bajewski took part in the education and spiritual formation of seminarians and junior friars, serving in roles later described as those of a vice-rector or assistant in the seminary community. The house was known for its Militia of the Immaculata, its printing presses, and its unusually large community of brothers. Bajewski thus belonged to the same religious family and apostolic environment as Kolbe, though he was a generation younger and his public life was far shorter.

German forces occupied the region in 1939. Religious houses, clergy, and Polish Catholic institutions were objects of Nazi policy aimed at breaking the Church’s influence in occupied Poland. Friars of Niepokalanów were arrested in more than one round-up. Father Antonin fell into German hands and was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp (KL Auschwitz) near Oświęcim. Prisoners identified as priests were often singled out for humiliation and violence. Notices associated with his cause state that he was subjected to brutal treatment and that he contracted a fatal illness in the camp; he died there on 8 May 1941, aged twenty-six. His body, like those of countless other Auschwitz victims, was not given a known Christian burial.

On 13 June 1999, during a liturgical celebration in Warsaw, Pope John Paul II beatified 108 Poles killed under the occupation, among them Antonin Bajewski, grouping them as martyrs who had died for the faith. The group is commemorated on 12 June in the liturgical calendar of Poland. Bajewski has not been canonized. Historical documentation of his interior life and daily ministry remains relatively sparse, as is often the case with young religious who left few writings and whose lives were cut off in the camps; what is securely known is his identity as a Conventual Franciscan priest formed at Niepokalanów, his arrest under the occupation, and his death at Auschwitz, which the Church has judged to be martyrdom.
