Biography

Short Description

Antonín Cyril Stojan was a Czech Roman Catholic priest, parliamentary deputy, and prelate who served as Archbishop of Olomouc in the early 1920s. He was born on 22 May 1851 in Beňov, a village in Moravia within the Austrian Empire, into a farming family of modest means. After secondary studies in Moravia, including at the gymnasium in Kroměříž, he entered the theological seminary in Olomouc and was ordained a priest in 1876. He spent the following decades in pastoral work in Moravia, where he became known for organizing Catholic associations, promoting education and charity, and fostering popular devotion to Saints Cyril and Methodius, the ninth-century apostles of the Slavs.

Stojan was a principal figure in the revival of Velehrad as a spiritual and cultural center of Slavic Christianity. In the early twentieth century he helped organize a series of unionist congresses there that sought dialogue and eventual reunion between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches of the Slavic world. He also supported the Apostolate of Saints Cyril and Methodius, an initiative of prayer and practical work for Christian unity among the Slavs. These activities made him one of the most prominent Czech Catholic public figures of his generation and linked his name lastingly with Velehrad and with Cyrillo-Methodian devotion.

Alongside his priestly ministry, Stojan pursued a long career in representative politics under the Habsburg monarchy and in the first years of Czechoslovakia. He sat in the Moravian provincial assembly and, from the late 1890s, in the Imperial Council in Vienna, where he defended Catholic and Czech interests. After the First World War and the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918, he served in the new state’s legislative bodies. His political work focused on the rights of the Church, Catholic schooling, and social welfare rather than on partisan nationalism alone.

In 1921 Pope Benedict XV appointed him Archbishop of Olomouc, the metropolitan see of Moravia, and he was consecrated the same year. His episcopate lasted only about two years and was devoted to reorganizing diocesan life after the war and continuing the Cyril and Methodius apostolate. He died in Olomouc on 29 September 1923. Stojan is remembered in Czech Catholic memory as a pastor, organizer, and advocate of Slavic Christian unity. A cause for his beatification has been introduced and he is honored with the title Servant of God; he has not been beatified or canonized.
