Biography

Short Description

Antoninus of Florence, born Antonio Pierozzi in Florence in 1389, was the son of Niccolò Pierozzi, a notary. From youth he sought admission to the Dominican Order. After an initial refusal on account of his frail health, he was received into the Observant reform associated with Blessed Giovanni Dominici. He made profession, was ordained, and soon became a leading figure of Observant Dominican life in Italy. He served as prior of houses at Cortona, Fiesole, Naples, and Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, and was closely involved in the foundation of the convent of San Marco in Florence, built with the patronage of Cosimo de' Medici and decorated by Fra Angelico.

In 1446 Pope Eugene IV appointed him Archbishop of Florence. He accepted the see only under obedience and continued to live with Dominican austerity. As archbishop he visited parishes, sought to reform the clergy, and became widely known as a father of the poor. He promoted practical charity, including aid to families of good standing who had fallen into hidden poverty, and advised both the Florentine government and the papacy. He remained a friar in habit and manner, often going on foot and distributing what came to him.

Antoninus was also a theologian, canonist, and historian. His Summa Moralis treated cases of conscience, economic ethics, and pastoral practice and became an influential handbook of moral theology. His Chronicon, or Summa Historialis, was a universal chronicle from creation to his own century, combining narrative with moral instruction. These works, together with sermons and lesser treatises, placed him among the principal Dominican authors of fifteenth-century Italy and linked scholastic tradition to the pastoral needs of Renaissance Florence.

He died in Florence on 2 May 1459 and was buried in the church of San Marco. Veneration followed quickly. Pope Adrian VI canonized him in 1523. His feast is kept on 2 May. He is remembered as a reforming bishop, a moral theologian of lasting influence, and a saint identified with Observant Dominican life and the civic-religious culture of Medicean Florence.
