Biography

Short Description

Antoninus of Sorrento, also known as Antoninus Abbot or Sant'Antonino, was a Benedictine monk and abbot of the early medieval period whose life is known primarily through later hagiographical tradition rather than contemporary documentary evidence. According to that tradition, he was born in the town of Campagna, in the region of Campania in southern Italy, in the mid-sixth century. He entered monastic life at the abbey of Monte Cassino, the community founded by Benedict of Nursia, and lived there as a monk during a period of severe political instability in the Italian peninsula, as Lombard forces expanded through the former territories of the Ostrogothic and Byzantine administrations.

Around 580 or in the following years, Monte Cassino was sacked by the Lombards, and the monastic community was dispersed. Antoninus left the ruined abbey and eventually settled in the area of Castellammare di Stabia, on the southern side of the Bay of Naples. There he took up the life of a hermit on Monte Aureo, the mountain now known as Monte Faito, which rises above the coast between Castellammare and Sorrento. Local tradition credits him with a life of austerity and with miracles performed during this eremitical period. The most frequently recounted of these wonders concerns a child who had been swallowed by a large sea creature; Antoninus is said to have rescued the child unharmed, an episode later commemorated in the art and civic imagery of Sorrento.

The inhabitants of Sorrento, impressed by his reputation for holiness, invited him to leave his hermitage and to become abbot of the monastery of Saint Agrippinus (San Agrippino) in their city. He accepted the office and governed the community until his death. Traditional accounts place his death at Sorrento on 14 February 625. He was buried in the city, and a church was later raised over his tomb; this sanctuary developed into the present Basilica of Sant'Antonino, whose crypt still houses his relics, including a silver bust-reliquary containing his skull. A later legend, set in the ninth century during raids by Saracen pirates along the Campanian coast, holds that the saint appeared on the walls of Sorrento and put the attackers to flight, a story that reinforced his role as civic protector.

Devotion to Antoninus became central to the religious identity of Sorrento, which regards him as its principal patron saint. His feast is kept on 14 February, the date recorded in the Roman Martyrology. The town of Campagna, which claims him as a native son, also honors him as a patron. Historical certainty about the details of his life remains limited: the dates commonly assigned to him, the precise sequence of his wanderings after the destruction of Monte Cassino, and the individual miracle stories all rest on medieval legend rather than on sixth- or seventh-century sources. Nonetheless, the cult is of long standing, the basilica in Sorrento has been a focus of pilgrimage for centuries, and Antoninus continues to be venerated as a Benedictine abbot and as the heavenly guardian of the Sorrentine peninsula.
