Biography

Short Description

Antonio da Stroncone, known in English as Anthony of Stroncone, was an Italian Franciscan lay brother associated with the Observant reform of the Order of Friars Minor. He was born in Stroncone, a small hill town in Umbria south of Terni, in the late fourteenth century. Later hagiographical tradition assigns various years to his birth, most often in the 1380s or 1391, but no contemporary baptismal or notarial record has established the date with certainty. Stroncone then lay within the Papal States. According to the Franciscan accounts that preserve his memory, he came of a devout local family and was drawn to the friars by the example of an uncle who already belonged to the order. While still young he took the Franciscan habit as a lay brother, that is, as a member of the community not destined for ordination, and he remained in that state for the whole of his religious life.

The Observant movement, which sought a stricter and more literal observance of the Rule of Saint Francis, was gathering strength in Umbria and Tuscany during his lifetime. Its leading public figures included Bernardine of Siena, John of Capistrano, and James of the Marches; Antonio belonged to the same reformed family of convents, though as a lay brother he did not share their apostolate of itinerant preaching. He lived in several Observant houses, among them the hermitage of the Carceri on the wooded slopes of Mount Subasio above Assisi, and other convents in Umbria and Tuscany. Traditional biographies describe a life of hidden labor and austerity: he is said to have served as cook, gardener, porter, and questor, to have practiced rigorous fasting and night prayer, and to have been marked by humility and obedience. As questor he begged alms for the community among the towns and rural districts of the region. Later writers attribute to him a reputation for holiness already in life, including reports of miracles and of spiritual insight, but these notices belong to the hagiographical tradition rather than to a rich contemporary documentary dossier. The career of a fifteenth-century lay brother was rarely recorded in detail.

In his later years Antonio resided in Assisi, the center of Franciscan memory. He died there on 7 February 1461. He was buried in Assisi, and his grave became a focus of local veneration. In the course of later centuries his relics were translated to Stroncone, where they are kept in the church of San Francesco. Stories of healings and other favors attributed to his intercession circulated in Umbria and in the Franciscan provinces, and his cult took root both in his native town and within the order.

The Apostolic See confirmed the immemorial cult of Antonio da Stroncone in 1687, during the pontificate of Pope Innocent XI. That confirmatio cultus is equivalent to beatification in the procedure then used for figures of long-standing popular veneration. He has never been canonized and is therefore styled Blessed. His liturgical memorial is observed on 7 February, particularly in Franciscan calendars and in the local church of Umbria. He is remembered less as a public actor of the Observant reform than as an exemplar of the humble, laboring lay brother, a type of holiness that the Franciscan tradition has always prized but that leaves only a slender trace in the archives.
