Biography
Antonio Franco was born in Naples on 26 September 1585, when the city was the capital of the Spanish-ruled Kingdom of Naples. He belonged to a noble family and received an education in keeping with that station, completing studies in both civil and canon law before ordination to the priesthood. In the early seventeenth century he served in clerical roles that linked the Neapolitan church with Sicily, including work as a chaplain associated with Cardinal Giannettino Doria, Archbishop of Palermo. Those connections placed a still young priest within the orbit of the higher clergy of the two kingdoms then jointly subject to the Spanish Habsburgs.
In 1617 Pope Paul V appointed him Prelate of Santa Lucia del Mela, a small territorial prelature in the mountains of northeastern Sicily near Messina, immediately subject to the Holy See. The office carried ordinary jurisdiction over a modest territory rather than the wealth or prominence of a major diocese. Franco took up residence there and remained in post until his death. He devoted himself to the pastoral government of the prelature, to the instruction and reform of the local clergy, and to the care of a flock that included many of the poor. Despite noble birth and the dignity of his rank, he was remembered as a pastor who lived with marked personal simplicity.
Witnesses later cited in his cause of beatification described an austere private regime: prolonged prayer, fasting, night vigils, and other penitential practices, together with almsgiving and attention to the sick. He acquired a local reputation for combining administrative duty with approachability and charity. Franco died in Santa Lucia del Mela on 2 September 1626, at the age of forty, and was buried in the cathedral of the prelature. His tomb became a focus of popular devotion in the town and the surrounding district of Sicily.
A cultus in his honor continued after his death. In the modern period the cause for beatification was taken up in due canonical form. Pope Benedict XVI authorized the decree on his heroic virtues, and Pope Francis approved a miracle attributed to his intercession. The beatification rite was celebrated on 2 September 2013 at Santa Lucia del Mela, with Cardinal Angelo Amato, then Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presiding as papal legate. Blessed Antonio Franco is commemorated on 2 September. He has not been canonized.
