Biography

Short Description

Blessed Antonio Migliorati, commonly known as Antonio da Amandola, was a Franciscan friar of the Observant reform who lived in the Marche of central Italy from the mid-fourteenth to the mid-fifteenth century. He was born in 1355 in Amandola, a hill town in the old March of Ancona, then within the Papal States (today in the province of Fermo). Later tradition specifies 17 January 1355 and describes his family as of modest means. In his youth he entered the Order of Friars Minor. The Observant movement, which sought a stricter living of the Rule of Saint Francis, was then taking root in the convents of the Marche, and Antonio belonged to that current of the order.

He spent nearly the whole of his long religious life in the Franciscan house of his native town. The principal sources for his biography are later hagiographical accounts rather than abundant contemporary records. They present him as a man of marked humility, poverty, and obedience, who undertook the lowliest offices of the community, lived in severe personal austerity, and devoted himself to prayer and to charity toward the poor and the sick of Amandola. A reputation for holiness and for miraculous interventions is said to have attached to him already in life, though much of what is related belongs to pious tradition compiled after his death.

Antonio died in Amandola on 25 January 1450, at about ninety-five years of age. He was buried in the church of the local Franciscan convent. Veneration by the townspeople began immediately. His body was later found incorrupt and has been preserved as a relic in the Church of San Francesco in Amandola. The town has long regarded him as its patron. In 1759 Pope Clement XIII confirmed the public ecclesiastical cult, an act that in modern terms corresponds to beatification. He has not been canonized. His liturgical memorial is kept on 25 January, especially in Franciscan calendars and in the local church.

Outside the Marche and the Franciscan Order, Antonio Migliorati remains a relatively obscure figure. Surviving notices do not permit a detailed reconstruction of his inner life, of any contacts he may have had with better-known Observant leaders of the fifteenth century, or of the precise sequence of offices he held. What can be said with confidence is that he represents the local, conventual holiness of the Observant Franciscans in the late medieval Papal States: a long life of poverty and charity, followed by an enduring popular cult centered on his tomb and incorrupt remains in Amandola.
