Biography

Short Description

Antonio Pavoni was born in 1326 in Savigliano, a town in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, then within the political orbit of the House of Savoy. Later Dominican and hagiographical accounts describe his family as belonging to the local nobility and state that he received a careful education in letters. While still an adolescent, around 1340, he entered the Order of Preachers at the Dominican convent in his native Savigliano. He completed the novitiate and the order's course of philosophical and theological study and was ordained to the priesthood in 1351. From early in his ministry he was remembered for personal austerity, humility, and effectiveness as a preacher in the towns of Piedmont.

After ordination Pavoni remained closely tied to the Dominican houses of the region. He served as prior, including of the convent at Savigliano, and preached in Turin and in smaller cities and towns. Fourteenth-century Piedmont was a zone of contact between the Catholic population and Waldensian communities established in the Alpine valleys to the west. Pavoni's preaching was directed in part against those groups. Pope Urban V appointed him inquisitor-general, and later tradition associates his mandate with Piedmont and neighboring districts. The surviving record does not allow a full reconstruction of his cases or of the exact years of his tenure, which is typical for many local Dominican officials of that century, but Catholic sources agree that he held the inquisitorial office while continuing to preach and to govern convents.

On 9 April 1374 Pavoni was in Bricherasio, a locality lying toward the Waldensian valleys southwest of Turin. He celebrated Mass in the parish church and preached to the congregation. After the liturgy, as he left the church, he was assaulted by a group of Waldensians and stabbed to death. Later accounts sometimes speak of a small band of attackers. The Catholic Church has treated the killing as martyrdom incurred in the exercise of his priestly and inquisitorial opposition to Waldensian teaching. His body was carried from Bricherasio back to Savigliano and buried in the Dominican church of San Domenico, where the tomb became the focus of local veneration.

In the centuries after his death Pavoni was honored in Piedmont as a martyr of the Order of Preachers. He was not raised to the altars by a full canonization with a universal feast. On 4 December 1856 Pope Pius IX confirmed the immemorial cultus, which constitutes his beatification. Blessed Antonio Pavoni is commemorated on 9 April, the anniversary of his death. Standard martyrologies and Dominican calendars record him as a blessed rather than a canonized saint. No well-documented list of special patronages of places, professions, or causes is attached to his name in the principal hagiographical references, and details beyond this outline rest mainly on regional Dominican tradition rather than on a richly documented contemporary vita.
