Biography

Short Description

Aphrahat, also known in Greek and Latin sources as Aphraates, was a Christian hermit of the fourth century whose life is known principally from the account given by Theodoret of Cyrrhus in the eighth chapter of the Historia Religiosa, or History of the Monks of Syria. Theodoret states that Aphrahat was a Persian by birth who abandoned his homeland after converting to Christianity. He first resided at Edessa, a major center of Syriac-speaking Christianity, and later established himself as an anchorite in a small dwelling in the countryside outside Antioch, the chief city of Roman Syria. There he belonged to the loosely organized world of Syrian ascetics who, in the decades after the Peace of the Church, pursued extreme simplicity of life while remaining accessible to visitors seeking prayer and counsel.

His manner of life was that of a typical Syrian hermit of the period. He occupied a modest hut, restricted his diet, and dressed with great simplicity. Theodoret notes that Aphrahat spoke Syriac rather than Greek and that Greek-speaking interlocutors communicated with him through an interpreter. Despite this linguistic barrier, people of various ranks came to him for healing and spiritual advice. He is presented not as a writer or a holder of ecclesiastical office but as a charismatic holy man whose authority rested on ascetic reputation and reported miracles.

The most public episode of his career occurred during the reign of the emperor Valens, who favored Arian clergy and expelled Nicene bishops from the churches of Antioch. Aphrahat left his cell and entered the city in order to strengthen the orthodox population. Theodoret records that the hermit spoke boldly against imperial religious policy. A courtier who mocked him on the road was afterwards overtaken by a sudden and fatal accident, an event interpreted by the orthodox as divine judgment. Aphrahat was also remembered for warning the emperor in connection with a military campaign; Valens’s subsequent death in the battle of Adrianople in 378 was later read in light of that warning. These stories, whatever their exact historical kernel, show how the Antiochene hermit was drawn into the Nicene–Arian conflict that dominated Eastern church life in the 370s.

Precise dates of birth and death are not preserved. Because Theodoret, who was born at Antioch around the last decade of the fourth century, claims to have visited Aphrahat as a boy and to have received his blessing, the hermit must have lived on after the death of Valens into the early fifth century. No contemporary source records a wife or children; his adult life is described entirely in monastic terms. In the West he was entered in the Roman Martyrology on 7 April as an anchoret of Antioch. He did not hold the office of bishop, patriarch, or pope, and he is to be distinguished from the better-known Aphrahat the Persian Sage, author of the Syriac Demonstrations, who lived and wrote inside the Sasanian Empire in the first half of the fourth century. The Antiochene Aphrahat left no extant writings; his memory depends on Theodoret’s hagiography and on the subsequent liturgical commemoration of Syrian monastic saints.
