Biography

Short Description

Saint Apollinaris of Valence was a Catholic bishop in southeastern Gaul during the late fifth and early sixth centuries. He was born at Vienne, an important Rhône city of the former imperial province of Viennensis, into a prominent Gallo-Roman senatorial family. His father, Hesychius, later entered the episcopate and became bishop of Vienne. Apollinaris’s brother was Alcimus Ecdicius Avitus, who succeeded their father in that see and is known from his letters, poems, and public role in the Catholic life of the Burgundian kingdom. The family’s standing shows how the old Roman aristocracy continued to occupy the principal sees of the Rhône valley after effective imperial administration in Gaul had ended.

According to the received chronology, Apollinaris was consecrated bishop of Valence in the later fifth century, often placed around 486. Valence stood on the Rhône south of Vienne, within the kingdom of the Burgundians. The Burgundian royal house was largely Arian, while the Gallo-Roman population and the episcopal hierarchy were Catholic. Later accounts state that he came into conflict with King Gundobad and was temporarily driven from his diocese before being allowed to return. Whether the dispute was strictly doctrinal or also political cannot be established with certainty from the surviving notices, but tension between Catholic bishops and Arian rulers is well attested in that realm.

Apollinaris belonged to the generation of bishops who sought to regulate church discipline as Burgundian power declined and Frankish influence increased. He is associated with the Council of Epaone (Epao) in 517, a synod of bishops from the Burgundian kingdom that issued canons on clerical life, marriage, penance, and the status of those who had been in communion with Arians. Conciliar subscriptions and later summaries are the principal evidence of this kind for his activity. No substantial body of his own writings survives, unlike those of his brother Avitus. His later pastoral reputation rested on local memory at Valence rather than on a rich contemporary documentary record.

He died in the early sixth century, according to traditional dating about 520. He was venerated as a saint by the church of Valence, and his feast is kept on 5 October. A cathedral at Valence was later dedicated under his name (Saint-Apollinaire), which attests to a continuing local cult. He should not be confused with the better-known martyr Apollinaris of Ravenna or with other bishops of the same name. The historical dossier is slender: family ties through Avitus, martyrological entries, conciliar association, and later hagiography. Exact years of birth and death are conventional rather than independently documented in detail, and many personal particulars remain unknown. He is best understood as a Gallo-Roman Nicene bishop of the Burgundian Rhône whose memory was preserved in his own city.
