Biography

Short Description

Saint Apollonius the Apologist, also called Apollonius of Rome, was a second-century Christian martyr remembered for a public defense of the faith before Roman authority. He lived in the reign of the emperor Commodus (180–192). Ancient Christian writers present him as a man of high standing in the city of Rome and of notable learning and philosophical culture. Jerome identifies him as a Roman senator. Nothing reliable is recorded of his birth, family, education, or early career; the surviving notices begin with the accusation that led to his trial.

According to Eusebius of Caesarea in the Ecclesiastical History and Jerome in De Viris Illustribus, Apollonius was denounced as a Christian by one of his slaves. Roman legal custom restricted such accusations by slaves against their masters, and the informer was punished—later narrative acts say his legs were broken. The case nonetheless went forward. The praetorian prefect Tigidius Perennis, in office in the early 180s, required Apollonius to answer for his religion. The hearing is described as taking place before the Senate. In that setting Apollonius delivered an apology, a reasoned account of Christian belief, which is why later tradition names him “the Apologist.”

Greek and Armenian recensions of the Acts of Apollonius preserve material presented as that defense. In them he argues for one God, rejects idolatry and the moral character of pagan cult, and speaks of Christ as teacher and savior. He refuses to sacrifice to the gods or to the emperor’s genius. After that refusal he was condemned. The usual report of his death is beheading; the conventional date is about 185, in the last years of Perennis’s prefecture. The Acts contain rhetorical and possibly later elements, and their historical value has been debated, but they agree in outline with Eusebius and Jerome and with the legal situation of Christians in the later second century, when the faith remained illicit and proceedings often began with private accusation rather than a general imperial edict.

Apollonius belongs with other second-century figures who combined public profession of Christianity with an attempt to explain it in terms an educated pagan audience might understand. His cult is ancient rather than the product of a later papal canonization. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 18 April; the Eastern Orthodox Church on 23 July. No securely attested burial place or widely recognized patronage is recorded. What can be said with confidence is limited to the Roman setting, the accusation, the defense before authority, and a martyr’s death under Commodus; the rest of his life remains unknown.
