Biography

Short Description

Saint Apollonius, commonly called Apollonius the Apologist, was a Christian of notable learning who was martyred in Rome in the reign of the emperor Commodus. The principal ancient witnesses are Eusebius of Caesarea, who in the fifth book of the Church History places the event under Commodus and names the Praetorian prefect Perennis as the examining magistrate, and Jerome, who in De Viris Illustribus describes Apollonius as a Roman senator who composed an outstanding work against the pagans and was betrayed by a slave. The so-called Acts of Apollonius, preserved in Greek and Armenian recensions, give a more detailed judicial narrative that most modern scholars regard as containing a substantially historical core rather than pure legend. According to these Acts a slave denounced his master in hope of the statutory reward; the informer was himself put to death for calumny, yet Apollonius was nevertheless arraigned, refused to swear by the Fortune of Commodus or to sacrifice, and delivered a reasoned defence of Christian monotheism and morals before being condemned.

No contemporary source records his place or date of birth, his family, or any clerical office. Later writers sometimes associate him with Alexandria, but the earliest evidence locates both his trial and his death in Rome, and the senatorial rank assigned by Jerome, whether strictly accurate or not, fits the setting of a hearing before the prefect and, in one recension, the Senate. He is nowhere described as a monk or a member of any later religious order; he appears as an educated lay Christian. The prefecture of Tigidius Perennis ended with the latter’s own fall in 185, and that year is the date conventionally assigned to the martyrdom. The manner of death is given as beheading in the more widely accepted recension; a variant speaks of the breaking of the legs. Nothing reliable is known of his burial.

The apology itself, so far as it can be recovered from the Acts, belongs to the same intellectual world as the writings of Justin Martyr and Athenagoras: it argues from the order of the cosmos against idolatry, insists on the moral fruits of Christian life, and accepts the legal penalty of confession. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century patristic scholarship, beginning with Harnack, treated the text as an early and relatively authentic specimen of a Christian defence delivered in a Roman court rather than a purely literary fiction. Beyond Eusebius, Jerome, and the Acts, no further second-century documentation survives, and medieval legendaries add little of historical value.

Liturgical commemoration was fixed in the Roman Martyrology on 18 April, the date still observed in the Latin Church; Byzantine calendars keep his memory on 23 July. He has not acquired a distinctive set of later patronages. Because his cult is of great antiquity he was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the medieval or modern type. Apollonius therefore remains one of the better-attested yet still sparsely documented Roman martyrs of the late Antonine age: a philosophically trained Christian whose public refusal to sacrifice is recorded by the church’s first historian and by an early hagiographical text of unusual judicial colour.
