Biography

Short Description

The designation Apostle (from Greek apostolos, one who is sent) is an office and title, not the proper name of a single historical person. In earliest Christian usage it refers chiefly to the Twelve chosen by Jesus of Nazareth in first-century Roman Palestine, to Paul of Tarsus, and to a handful of other first-generation witnesses named in New Testament texts. The query supplies no personal name, no Wikidata identifier, and no other uniquely identifying information. No individual life can therefore be verified, and every personal field in this record is left empty rather than guessed.

The four canonical Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, written in the later first century, present the Twelve as companions of Jesus during his public ministry in Galilee and Judea. Surviving name-lists (Mark 3, Matthew 10, Luke 6, Acts 1) agree on most names but differ on a few, and Judas Iscariot is replaced by Matthias after the crucifixion. These figures are described as leaders of the Jerusalem community and as missionaries. Later ecclesiastical tradition assigned each a field of evangelization and, often, a martyrdom; those later legends are generally late, mutually inconsistent, and historically uncertain. Paul, who did not belong to the Twelve and never met Jesus before the crucifixion, claimed the title on the basis of a visionary call and became the most fully documented missionary and theologian of the first Christian generation.

New Testament writers also apply the word apostle to Barnabas, Andronicus, Junia, James the brother of Jesus, and others. In subsequent centuries the title was extended analogically to founding missionaries of particular churches (for example the so-called Apostles of the Slavs). None of these usages identifies a unique biographical subject when the only label given is Apostle. Dates of birth and death, places of origin and burial, marital status, children, religious order, and patronage all belong to named individuals, not to the office.

Formal canonization and beatification processes of the later medieval and modern type were not applied to first-century apostles; they were commemorated as saints from the earliest liturgical calendars. Feast days likewise attach to specific names (Peter and Paul on 29 June, the remaining apostles on various dates) rather than to the generic title. Because no particular person has been specified, this record contains no invented chronology, no invented geography, and no invented patronage list.
