Biography

Short Description

Bartholomew is numbered among the Twelve Apostles of Jesus in the New Testament lists of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and the Acts of the Apostles, where he is regularly paired with Philip. The name is a patronymic from Aramaic bar-Talmai, “son of Talmai.” The canonical texts give no birthplace, parentage, occupation, or independent sayings of Bartholomew, and they do not record his death. From an early date many Christian writers identified him with Nathanael, the man from Cana in Galilee whom Philip brought to Jesus in the Gospel of John, who confessed Jesus as Son of God and King of Israel, and who appears again at the lakeside after the Resurrection. The identification rests on the complementary silence of John about Bartholomew and of the Synoptics and Acts about Nathanael, together with the shared association with Philip. It was already familiar to Augustine and became standard in much Eastern and Western tradition, but it is not demonstrated by the New Testament itself and is treated with caution by many modern historians. No year of birth is known, and even the Cana connection depends on accepting the Nathanael identification.

After Pentecost the New Testament is silent on Bartholomew’s later life. Christian literature from the second and third centuries onward assigned him wide missionary journeys. Eusebius of Caesarea, reporting a tradition he linked with Origen, wrote that Bartholomew had preached in “India”—a term that in ancient usage could cover a broad eastern region—and had left a Hebrew copy of the Gospel of Matthew, which the Alexandrian teacher Pantaenus was said to have found there in the late second century. Other traditions, preserved in apocryphal acts, martyrologies, and local church histories, place his preaching in Mesopotamia, Parthia, Lycaonia, Phrygia, and above all Armenia. The Armenian Apostolic Church regards Bartholomew and Thaddeus (Jude) as its “First Illuminators,” a claim that belongs to that church’s foundational memory rather than to independently datable first-century evidence. Apocryphal “Acts of Bartholomew” and related texts circulate legendary itineraries and miracles; they document devotion, not a recoverable itinerary of the historical apostle.

The dominant Western and Armenian tradition of his death holds that he was martyred in Armenia at Albanopolis (sometimes called Urbanopolis) after converting a member of the royal house, often named in connection with King Astyages. Accounts of the manner of death vary: flaying alive followed by beheading is the version that shaped later art and patronage; crucifixion and other forms also appear. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him as having preached in Armenia and been flayed and beheaded. These narratives are hagiographical. They cannot be confirmed from contemporary first-century sources, the site of Albanopolis is itself disputed (historic Armenia and Caucasian Albania have both been proposed), and alternative traditions of martyrdom in India exist. No historically established year of death survives. The flaying became his most distinctive iconographic attribute: he is often shown holding his own skin, as in Michelangelo’s Last Judgment.

Veneration of Bartholomew is ancient and does not rest on a later papal canonization or beatification; he has been honored as an apostle-saint from the early Christian centuries. His principal Western feast is 24 August. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 11 June with Barnabas and observes a translation of relics on 25 August. Medieval accounts describe relics taken from Armenia to Lipari, later to Benevento, and in the late tenth century a portion brought to Rome, where San Bartolomeo all’Isola on the Tiber Island became a major Western shrine; Benevento and other churches also claim relics. Because of the flaying tradition he became patron of tanners, leather workers, bookbinders, butchers, cobblers, trappers, plasterers, and those suffering from skin diseases and neurological or nervous disorders, and he is invoked as a patron of Armenia. He was never Bishop of Rome or patriarch or catholicos of an Eastern see. Nothing reliable is known of any marriage or children.
