Biography

Short Description

Thomas, also called Didymus (Greek for twin), was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ. Almost everything that can be said of him with confidence from early sources comes from the New Testament, above all the Gospel of John. There he is portrayed as loyal yet questioning: he urges the other disciples to go with Jesus even if it means dying with him (John 11:16); he asks how they can know the way if they do not know where Jesus is going (John 14:5); and after the Resurrection he refuses to believe the report of the others until he has seen and touched the wounds of the crucified Jesus, then confesses, My Lord and my God (John 20:24–29). He is also named among those present at the later appearance by the Sea of Tiberias (John 21:2). The Synoptic lists of the Twelve include him but add no biographical detail. His birthplace, parentage, and year of birth are not recorded in any early reliable source; later guesses that he came from Galilee rest only on the general origin of the apostolic group, not on evidence specific to him.

Post-biblical tradition assigned Thomas a missionary field in the East. Origen, as reported by Eusebius of Caesarea in the fourth century, associated him with Parthia. A much fuller, though legendary, narrative appears in the third-century Syriac Acts of Thomas, which send the apostle to India in the service of a king named Gondophares. That ruler is independently attested by coins and the Takht-i-Bahi inscription as an Indo-Parthian king of the first century, which gives the framework of the Acts a historical hook even though the work itself is hagiographic and not a contemporary chronicle. According to that tradition and the living memory of the Saint Thomas Christians (Nasranis) of Kerala, Thomas landed on the Malabar Coast, often said to have been at Muziris near modern Kodungallur, and founded a cluster of communities later remembered as the seven churches of Malabar. The antiquity of Christianity on that coast is well established; whether the apostle himself founded it cannot be proved from first-century documents, but Syriac and Indian Christian memory of a Thomine origin is already visible in late antiquity.

The same traditions hold that Thomas later went to the Coromandel Coast and was martyred, commonly said to have been pierced with a spear, at or near Mylapore (Mailapur), now within Chennai. No contemporary source fixes the year of death; later calendars and hagiographies place it in the second half of the first century, with dates such as about 72 circulating widely but remaining unverified. Fourth-century Syriac witnesses, including hymns of Ephrem the Syrian, already speak of Thomas’s relics as having been brought from India to Edessa. In the thirteenth century some of those relics were translated to Ortona in Italy, where they are still venerated, while a tomb associated with the apostle has been maintained at Mylapore and is now marked by San Thome Basilica. Portuguese accounts of the sixteenth century and earlier travelers such as Marco Polo reported local veneration of that tomb.

Thomas has been honored as a saint from the earliest Christian centuries by popular and liturgical acclamation; there was no later papal process of beatification or canonization. In the Roman Catholic Church and the Syro-Malabar Church his principal feast is 3 July; the Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 6 October; an older Western date of 21 December survives in some martyrologies. Because of the palace-building episode in the Acts of Thomas he became a patron of architects, builders, masons, surveyors, and related crafts, and because of the Johannine narrative he is invoked against doubt. He is also named patron of India and of several neighboring lands. His confession of Christ’s divinity and the story of an apostolic mission to India have made him a central figure both in Western devotion and in the identity of the ancient Christian communities of South India.
