Biography

Short Description

Simon, called the Zealot or the Cananaean, was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus of Nazareth. He is named in every New Testament catalogue of the Twelve (Matthew 10:4, Mark 3:18, Luke 6:15, and Acts 1:13), yet the canonical writings record nothing else about him: no saying, no miracle, no family circumstance, and no individual action. The distinguishing epithets are the Zealot (Greek zelotes) in Luke-Acts and the Cananaean (Greek Kananaios) in Matthew and Mark. The latter is not a reference to the town of Cana but a transliteration of the Aramaic qan'an, meaning zealous, and is therefore synonymous with the Greek title. Whether the name indicates former membership in the militant Jewish Zealot movement remains debated; many historians note that the organised Zealot party is more clearly attested in the decades surrounding the First Jewish-Roman War (66-73) than in the lifetime of Jesus, so the epithet may simply describe ardent religious commitment. Simon was a common Jewish name (Hebrew Shimon, 'he has heard'), and the New Testament mentions several other Simons, including Simon Peter, Simon of Cyrene, and Simon Magus; the epithets serve to keep this apostle distinct from Peter in particular.

No first-century or early second-century source outside the apostolic lists supplies a biography. From late antiquity onward, ecclesiastical writers and apocryphal acts constructed missionary careers that cannot be confirmed. In the Latin West, Simon was customarily paired with the Apostle Jude (Thaddaeus). The Golden Legend and related medieval texts send the two to Egypt and then to Persia, where they supposedly confronted magicians and pagan cults before being put to death. Eastern traditions scatter him more widely: Egypt, Cyrenaica, North Africa, Persia, or even Britain. The British legend, which appears in late medieval English sources, has no early foundation. Some ancient authors also confused or identified this Simon with Simeon son of Clopas, the second bishop of Jerusalem who was crucified under Trajan around the early second century; modern scholarship generally treats the apostle and the Jerusalem bishop as distinct persons. Because the later itineraries contradict one another and rest on documents written centuries after the events they claim to describe, the historical aftermath of Simon's life after Pentecost remains unknown.

Accounts of his death are equally legendary and mutually inconsistent. A persistent Western tradition holds that he was martyred by being sawn in two, a motif that later made him a patron of sawyers and woodcutters; other versions speak of crucifixion, beheading, or death by the sword in Persia or elsewhere. No year can be established. Relics ascribed to Saints Simon and Jude have been venerated for centuries in Rome, especially at an altar in St Peter's Basilica, and in other churches in Europe; the historical path of those relics from the first century cannot be traced with any confidence. In the absence of contemporary evidence, claims about the place of burial remain unverified.

Liturgically, the Roman Catholic Church, together with many Anglican and Lutheran calendars, keeps the feast of Saints Simon and Jude on 28 October. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates Simon the Zealot on 10 May and also includes him among the Twelve on 30 June. He is regarded as a patron of tanners, curriers, and sawyers. The very thinness of the historical record is characteristic of most of the Twelve apart from the inner circle of Peter, James, and John: their authority in Christian tradition derives from their inclusion in the group Jesus appointed as witnesses of his ministry and resurrection and as the foundation of the apostolic church, rather than from a recoverable individual life story.
