Biography

Short Description

The Apostles (from Greek apostolos, “one who is sent”) were the principal disciples chosen by Jesus of Nazareth during his public ministry in first-century Galilee and Judea, then a cluster of territories under Roman rule. Christian tradition, grounded in the four canonical Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, identifies a core group of twelve men. The Synoptic lists (Matthew 10:2–4, Mark 3:16–19, Luke 6:14–16) and Acts 1:13 name, with minor variations, Simon called Peter, Andrew his brother, James son of Zebedee, John his brother, Philip, Bartholomew (often identified with Nathanael of John 1), Thomas, Matthew the tax collector (also called Levi), James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus (also Judas son of James or Lebbaeus), Simon the Cananaean or Zealot, and Judas Iscariot. After Judas’s death, Acts 1 describes the casting of lots by which Matthias was added to restore the number twelve. The Gospel of John does not give a full catalogue but repeatedly refers to “the Twelve” and names several of them. Precise years of birth are unknown for all of them; they are generally understood to have been adults during Jesus’ ministry in the late 20s and early 30s CE.

Most of the Twelve were Galileans of ordinary occupations. Peter, Andrew, James, and John were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee; Matthew was a tax collector. The Gospels present their calling as a deliberate act of Jesus, who sent them to preach, heal, and announce the kingdom of God, and who at the Last Supper associated them with the new covenant. After the crucifixion of Jesus, commonly dated by historians to around 30–33 CE, the New Testament portrays them as witnesses to the resurrection and as leaders of the earliest community in Jerusalem. Acts narrates the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and the subsequent spread of the message first among Jews in Jerusalem and then, through Peter and especially through Paul of Tarsus (who claimed apostolic authority though he was not one of the Twelve), among Gentiles in the wider Roman world. First Corinthians 15:5–7 preserves an early creed listing resurrection appearances to Peter (Cephas), to the Twelve, and to James and “all the apostles,” indicating that “apostle” could also be used more broadly than the Twelve alone.

Independent historical evidence for the later careers and deaths of most of the Twelve is thin. The only apostle whose death is recorded in the New Testament is James son of Zebedee, executed by Herod Agrippa I (Acts 12:2), an event usually placed around 44 CE. Peter is associated in early Christian writers (notably 1 Clement and later Irenaeus and Eusebius) with ministry and martyrdom in Rome, commonly linked to the Neronian persecution of the mid-60s CE; a single death year cannot be fixed with certainty. Judas Iscariot’s end is described as suicide in Matthew 27 and as a fatal fall in Acts 1. Later ecclesiastical traditions of uneven reliability assign missionary journeys and martyrdoms to the others—Thomas in India, Andrew in Greece or Scythia, Bartholomew in Armenia or India, and so on. These accounts, preserved in apocryphal acts and medieval hagiography, cannot be verified on the same footing as the first-century New Testament texts. No single city or country of death, and no single burial place, can therefore be assigned to the Apostles as a group.

In Christian ecclesiology the Apostles occupy a foundational role. Catholic, Orthodox, and many Protestant churches regard apostolic witness and, in episcopal traditions, apostolic succession as marks of continuity with the first generation. They were not members of a later religious order, nor did the college as such hold the office of pope or patriarch, though Peter was later counted as first bishop of Rome and James the Just (not one of the Twelve in the Synoptic lists, but called an apostle in Paul and Acts) was leader of the Jerusalem church. Some of the Twelve were married: the Gospels mention Peter’s mother-in-law, and 1 Corinthians 9:5 refers to apostles travelling with believing wives; whether others had spouses or children is not documented. Because they belong to the apostolic age, they were venerated as saints from the beginning rather than canonized or beatified by a later pope under the medieval or modern processes. The Eastern Orthodox Church keeps the Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles on 30 June; the Roman calendar commemorates them chiefly as individuals (Peter and Paul on 29 June, and other apostles on various dates). Patronages are attached mainly to individual apostles rather than to the Twelve as a single juridical or hagiographical unit.
