Biography

Short Description

Saint Apphia (also spelled Appia or Aphphia; Greek Ἀπφία) is a first-century Christian figure known from the New Testament and from later hagiographical tradition. In the Epistle to Philemon, written by the Apostle Paul from imprisonment in the mid-first century, Paul greets “Apphia our sister” together with Philemon and Archippus, and the church that assembled in their house. The letter concerns the converted runaway slave Onesimus and presupposes a Christian household of some standing in Asia Minor. Scripture itself does not state Apphia’s family relationship to Philemon, her birth, or her death; those details come from subsequent ecclesiastical tradition rather than from contemporary historical records.

Christian tradition, especially in the East and in the Roman Martyrology, identifies Apphia as the wife of Philemon of Colossae, a city in Phrygia in the Lycus valley of western Asia Minor, near Laodicea and Hierapolis. Philemon is portrayed as a prosperous believer whose home served as a meeting place for the local church. Archippus, named in the same greeting and also addressed in the Epistle to the Colossians, is sometimes described in later sources as a fellow labourer and occasionally as a son of the household, though that kinship is not established in the New Testament. Onesimus, after his conversion, is associated with this same circle. The Apostolic Constitutions mention Philemon in a list of early bishops, in one tradition linked with Gaza, which may reflect a separate or confused strand of memory rather than a firmly documented career.

Hagiographical accounts relate that Apphia, Philemon, and Archippus were martyred in Colossae during the persecution of Christians under the emperor Nero (mid-first century). According to Orthodox synaxaria and related texts, they were celebrating the Eucharist in their house while a pagan festival was under way; a mob of idolaters broke in, seized them, and brought them before a local official. After torture they were put to death, commonly said to have been stoned. The Roman Martyrology commemorates them as disciples of Paul who suffered at Colossae in Phrygia in Nero’s time. No first-century non-Christian source confirms the martyrdom, and the New Testament is silent on their end; the story belongs to the traditional passion narratives of the Colossian household rather than to independently verified chronology. No reliable year of birth or death, and no burial place, can be established from contemporary evidence.

Veneration of Apphia is ancient and liturgical rather than the product of a later formal canonization process. She is commemorated with Philemon and Archippus on 22 November in the Roman Martyrology and in the Byzantine calendar. The Eastern Orthodox Church also remembers them, together with Onesimus, on 19 February. She is honoured as a martyr and as one of the earliest named Christian women connected with a house church in Asia Minor. Nothing certain is known of her parentage, childhood, or any religious order, and she is not associated with a defined list of patronages. Her historical footprint remains that of a named member of a first-century Colossian household, around whom the Church later gathered a fuller account of marriage, hospitality, and martyrdom.
