Biography

Short Description

Aprunculus of Trier, also known as Abrunculus and as Aprunculus of Treves, was a bishop of the see of Trier in the early sixth century, when the former Roman city of Augusta Treverorum lay in the Merovingian Frankish kingdom of Austrasia. Almost nothing can be established about his birth, family, education, or personal life. He is known chiefly from the medieval episcopal catalogues of Trier, which assign him a very short tenure conventionally dated to about 525–526. Later tradition has sometimes confused him with Saint Aprunculus of Clermont, a distinct fifth-century bishop of the Auvergne whose career is described by Gregory of Tours; modern historical writing treats the two men as separate figures.

Trier remained one of the principal bishoprics of the Rhineland and of northern Gaul. Its bishops inherited the prestige of a city that had been an imperial residence in the fourth century and that continued to serve as an ecclesiastical centre under Frankish rule. Aprunculus is generally placed in the diocesan succession shortly before Saint Nicetius, whose long and comparatively well-documented pontificate began around 526. The extreme brevity of Aprunculus’s recorded episcopate may mean that he died soon after taking office, or it may simply reflect the fragmentary character of the early lists. No contemporary narrative of his life survives.

He is reported to have died in 526, presumably at Trier. From an early date the local church venerated him as a saint, and his feast came to be kept on 22 April. The cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational type typical of early bishops honoured as confessors; there is no surviving papal act of canonization that can be attached to a named pontiff. Details of his burial place, any possible monastic background, and the circumstances of his death are not preserved in sources that can be independently verified.

His historical importance therefore lies in the continuity of the Trier episcopal line during the first generations of Merovingian rule rather than in a recoverable biography. He was neither pope nor patriarch. There is no documentary evidence that he belonged to a religious order, that he was married, or that he had children. No specific patronages of places, professions, or causes can be confirmed beyond his status as a former bishop of Trier, and devotion to him has remained essentially regional.
