Biography

Short Description

Saint Aquilina was a Christian virgin martyr of the late third century, commemorated in both Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic tradition. According to the Greek synaxaria and the Roman Martyrology, she was a native of Byblos in Phoenicia, a coastal city of the Roman East corresponding to present-day Jbeil in Lebanon. Hagiographical tradition places her birth about 281 and states that she was raised in a Christian household. The sources portray her as a child of unusual religious fervor who, while still very young, spoke of Christ among pagan companions and urged them to abandon idol worship.

Her martyrdom is placed in the reign of the emperor Diocletian (284-305), when she was about twelve years of age. The passion names the local judge Volusianus (Volusian). Arrested for professing Christianity and for encouraging others in the faith, she refused to sacrifice to the gods. Martyrological notices record that she was tortured with heated iron rods driven through her ears and into her skull. Some recensions of the legend add beating, imprisonment, and a miraculous healing by an angel before a second interrogation. She is said either to have died of these wounds or to have been beheaded thereafter. The Roman Martyrology for 13 June summarizes her death at Byblos as a consecration to God through this torment.

Like many martyrs associated with the Diocletianic era, Aquilina is known almost exclusively from later liturgical and hagiographical texts rather than from contemporary court records or inscriptions. The core elements—Byblos as her city, her youth, the name of the judge, and the distinctive torture of the ears—are relatively stable across the Greek and Latin notices, while additional narrative details vary by recension. She is honored as a virgin martyr. Precise years of birth and death rest on traditional calculation from her reported age and the imperial setting, not on independent documentary evidence.

Her feast is kept on 13 June in the Byzantine calendar and in the Roman Martyrology. Devotion has been especially associated with Byblos and the wider Levant, and her story was transmitted in Orthodox synaxaria and in Western martyrologies. Later tradition reports a translation of relics to Constantinople, though the original place of burial is not independently documented. She was recognized by ancient cultus rather than by a medieval papal canonization process, and she remains in Christian memory as an example of steadfastness in childhood.
