Biography

Short Description

Saint Arbogast (Latin Arbogastus) was a seventh-century bishop of Strasbourg whose life is known almost entirely from later medieval hagiography rather than from contemporary documents. The principal narrative source is a Vita composed in the tenth century, long after the events it describes, so many details of his origin, career, and miracles cannot be independently confirmed. Later tradition made him a native of Ireland or of Scotland (Scotia, a name that in early medieval usage often designated Ireland). That claim belongs to a widespread Continental pattern of ascribing insular missionary origins to local saints and is not corroborated by seventh-century evidence. Modern historians have also suggested that he may have belonged to a Frankish aristocratic family, possibly related to the fourth-century magister militum Arbogast and to the fifth-century Count Arbogast of Trier. Nothing certain is known of his birthplace, parentage, or year of birth.

According to the received legend, Arbogast lived for a time as a hermit in the forest of Haguenau (associated in some accounts with Surbourg) in Alsace. His reputation for holiness is said to have reached the Frankish court. The Vita links him with King Dagobert, whose son—sometimes identified in later retellings as Sigebert—was killed in a hunting accident and restored to life through Arbogast’s prayers. In gratitude the king appointed him bishop of Strasbourg. The chronology is difficult to reconcile with precision: Dagobert I reigned in the first half of the seventh century, while the conventional date assigned to Arbogast’s death is 678, and some reconstructions therefore place his episcopate later in the century. As bishop he is credited with pastoral care of the diocese, a reputation for humility (including the refusal of worldly display and a preference for travelling on foot), and the foundation or restoration of churches, among them a church dedicated to Saint Martin.

Arbogast is said to have asked not to be buried in the episcopal church but in a place of execution outside the city, so that ground associated with criminals and with pre-Christian burial might be sanctified by his tomb. A church later rose over the site and became the centre of his cult; it is identified with the later church of Saint Arbogast in Strasbourg. He died, according to the traditional date preserved in martyrologies and in standard hagiographical reference works, in 678. His feast is kept on 21 July. He is venerated as patron of the city of Strasbourg, and his cult was firmly established in the medieval diocese even where the legendary episodes of the Vita cannot be verified. He was honoured as a saint from an early period by popular cultus rather than by a recorded papal canonization of the later medieval type.
