Biography

Short Description

Saint Arcade, known in Latin sources as Arcadius, was a Christian martyr associated with the city of Caesarea in the Roman province of Mauretania Caesariensis, corresponding to modern Cherchell in Algeria. Virtually nothing can be established about his birth, family, or early life from contemporary records. The principal source for his story is a later passio that circulated in the Latin West and was incorporated into medieval martyrologies. Tradition situates his death in the period of imperial persecution of Christians, most often the persecution initiated by Diocletian in the first decade of the fourth century, although no independent confirmation of the exact year exists.

The narrative of his martyrdom relates that Arcade, a man of respectable standing, went into hiding when the persecution reached Caesarea. Officials then arrested a relative in his stead. Moved by this, Arcade surrendered himself to the authorities and publicly confessed himself a Christian. When he refused to participate in the required sacrifices, the presiding magistrate ordered that he be put to death by successive amputation of his limbs. The hagiographer describes how the martyr's fingers, hands, arms, feet and legs were cut away while he remained alive, all the while offering prayers and thanksgiving. He died only after this protracted torture.

Arcade's name appears in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum and subsequently in the Roman Martyrology on 12 January, with the notice of his passion at Caesarea in Mauretania. No reliable information survives concerning the location of his tomb or the later history of his relics. Because he belongs to the ancient layer of saints whose cult arose spontaneously in the centuries following the persecutions, he was never formally canonized by a pope according to the procedures developed in the later Middle Ages and early modern period.

Hagiographical critics have long noted that the Acts of Arcadius display rhetorical and miraculous features characteristic of legendary rather than historical passions. The extreme form of mutilation described may be an elaboration intended to edify. Even so, the commemoration of a martyr named Arcadius at Caesarea Mauretaniae is regarded as resting on a genuine local tradition. He remains inscribed in the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church as a witness to the faith in Roman North Africa.
