Biography

Short Description

Saint Lawrence (Latin: Laurentius), commonly called Archdeacon Lawrence or Lawrence of Rome, was a deacon of the Church of Rome in the mid-third century and one of the most celebrated martyrs of the early Latin Church. He served under Pope Sixtus II as archdeacon, the foremost of Rome’s seven deacons, and in that office was responsible for the Church’s temporal goods and for the care of the poor. Firm contemporary documentation of his life is limited. The Chronography of 354, in its Depositio Martyrum, already records his burial on 10 August, which places his death in the Roman calendar within a century of the event. Fourth-century authors, notably Ambrose of Milan in De officiis ministrorum and the Spanish Christian poet Prudentius in the Peristephanon, treat Lawrence as a well-known Roman martyr and transmit the principal elements of his passion. Later medieval acta elaborate the story considerably and are treated with caution by historians.

The historical setting of his death is the persecution initiated by the emperor Valerian. In 257–258 Valerian ordered that Christian clergy be required to sacrifice to the Roman gods and that church property be seized. Pope Sixtus II was arrested during the liturgy and executed on 6 August 258. Tradition holds that Lawrence, wishing to share his bishop’s fate, was told that he would follow after three days. The Roman prefect then demanded the treasures of the Church. Lawrence obtained a brief delay, distributed remaining funds and sacred vessels for the relief of the needy, and when summoned presented the poor, the crippled, and the blind as the Church’s true wealth. He was condemned to death. Passion narratives describe execution by roasting on a gridiron, a detail already known to Ambrose and Prudentius in the late fourth century; Lawrence is said to have remarked that he was done on one side and should be turned over. Some modern scholars have argued that decapitation, the penalty specified for clergy in Valerian’s second edict, is more likely as the historical mode of death and that the gridiron belongs to cultic legend, but the roasting story has been inseparable from Lawrence’s memory in liturgy and art since late antiquity. The year of death, 258, is the date accepted in standard historical reconstructions because it is tied to the securely dated martyrdom of Sixtus II.

Lawrence was buried in the cemetery of Cyriaca on the Via Tiburtina outside the walls of Rome. The emperor Constantine later built a basilica over the tomb; the present Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura occupies that site and is one of the seven principal pilgrimage churches of Rome. His feast on 10 August is among the most ancient in the Roman rite and was observed with a vigil and, in medieval Rome, with a special station. Veneration spread widely through Italy, Gaul, Spain, and the rest of the Latin West, and Lawrence became one of the few deacons whose cult rivaled that of the great episcopal martyrs. Relics and dedications proliferated; numerous churches, including the Laurentian basilicas in Rome, attest to the strength of the cult from the fourth century onward.

Medieval tradition often states that Lawrence was born in Hispania, frequently at Osca (Huesca) or sometimes Valencia, and that he came to Rome in the company of the future Pope Sixtus II. These details do not appear in the earliest liturgical or patristic witnesses and cannot be verified from contemporary evidence; they remain pious tradition rather than established fact. No reliable source records a spouse or children. Lawrence was not a pope or a patriarch, nor a member of a later religious order; he belonged to the diaconal clergy of the Roman church. He was never canonized by a formal papal process of the kind that developed in the later Middle Ages; his sainthood is pre-congregational, resting on continuous public veneration from the third and fourth centuries. He is invoked as a patron of the city of Rome, of deacons, of the poor, of cooks and chefs, of comedians, of librarians and archivists, of students, of tanners and vintners, of various crafts, of places such as Huesca and Sri Lanka, and against fire, associations that grew from his office, his legend, and the manner of his reported death.
