Biography

Short Description

Archippus was an Athenian poet of Old Comedy who competed in the dramatic festivals of Athens in the later fifth century BC. The Suda, a Byzantine compilation drawing on earlier Hellenistic scholarship, identifies him as an Athenian comic playwright of the old school and records that he won a single victory. An inscribed list of comic victors at the Lenaea likewise credits Archippus with one win, placing him among poets active in the same decades as Aristophanes. No ancient authority supplies a year of birth or death, the names of his parents, or any anecdote about his private life. He is known solely through his activity as a dramatist and through the later transmission of titles and quotations.

Several play titles are preserved in the Suda and in later excerptors. They include Amphitryon, Fishes (Ichthyes), Heracles Getting Married, Wealth (Plutus), Rhinon, and a comedy called the Donkey or the Donkey's Shadow. The comedy Fishes is the best documented. Fragments quoted chiefly by Athenaeus show that it featured a chorus of fishes and treated culinary luxury, the habits of sea creatures, and probably satirical dealings between the fish and the Athenians. Such an animal chorus belongs to a well-attested type in Old Comedy, parallel to the birds, wasps, and frogs of Aristophanes. A limited number of other verses and short passages from Archippus survive in the standard collections of the Greek comic fragments.

Ancient scholars sometimes compared Archippus with Aristophanes, noting similarities of diction or comic idea. These remarks belong to the grammatical tradition of later antiquity rather than to any biography. Archippus worked in the competitive environment of the City Dionysia and Lenaea, where poets presented comedies that mixed political comment, personal ridicule, mythological parody, and fantastic spectacle. After Aristophanes, whose eleven complete plays dominate the surviving record, poets such as Archippus are represented only by titles and excerpts preserved by Athenaeus, Pollux, the lexicographers, and the scholiasts.

The loss of his complete plays means that any modern picture of Archippus remains fragmentary and provisional. He stands as one of the lesser-known but securely attested practitioners of Old Attic Comedy in the closing years of the fifth century BC. Later antiquity did not transmit a Life of Archippus, and he does not figure in the anecdotal literature that grew up around more famous comic poets such as Cratinus or Aristophanes. What can be said with confidence is drawn from the Suda, the inscriptional victor lists, and the scattered quotations assembled by later compilers.
