Biography

Short Description

Saint Arcontius, known in French as Arconce, was bishop of Viviers in the Vivarais, a territory along the Rhône in what is now the Ardèche in southern France. He is honoured as a saint and martyr in the Catholic Church. Almost nothing can be established about his birth, family, education, or the path by which he reached the episcopate. Notices that survive place him in the eighth century, a period when Frankish rulers were consolidating authority in Gaul and when bishops frequently found themselves in tension with local communities over church property, dues, and immunities. He appears in the traditional episcopal catalogues of Viviers and is commonly numbered among the early bishops of that see, though the exact sequence and chronology of the list for this era remain imperfectly documented.

According to later hagiographical summaries, Arcontius was killed by a mob of the inhabitants of Viviers. The underlying cause is not recorded in any contemporary source. Subsequent accounts suggest that the violence arose from his defence of ecclesiastical rights or from a dispute over church revenues or privileges. Some traditions state that he was stoned to death. Because he died in connection with the exercise of his office, he has been regarded as a martyr. No early passion narrative or detailed vita is known to exist; the episode is known only from brief later notices, martyrological entries, and local episcopal lists. Modern historians therefore treat the precise circumstances with caution.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 19 September with a short entry identifying him as bishop at Viviers. That date remains his feast day. Devotion to him has been essentially local, centred on the diocese he served. He is not credited in standard reference works with a wide range of patronages of places, professions, illnesses, or social groups. There is no evidence that he held the office of pope or patriarch, nor that he belonged to a religious order; he is remembered as a diocesan bishop. No source records a spouse or children. His place of burial is not specified in the surviving notices.

The extreme scarcity of documentation is typical of many Merovingian and early Carolingian bishops whose names survive chiefly in martyrologies and diocesan catalogues rather than in contemporary charters or narrative histories. Beyond the traditional year of death, the location of his see, the manner of his killing as reported in later tradition, and his liturgical commemoration, little else can be stated with confidence.
