Biography

Short Description

Aristides of Athens, often called Aristides the Philosopher and in some manuscript traditions Marcianus Aristides, was a Christian apologist of the second century. The principal ancient witnesses to his life are Eusebius of Caesarea and Jerome. In the Ecclesiastical History, Eusebius records that Aristides, a man of faith devoted to the Christian religion, composed an apology for the faith and presented it to the emperor, as Quadratus had also done. Eusebius associates this activity with the reign of Hadrian in the earlier second century. Jerome, in De Viris Illustribus and related notices, describes Aristides as an Athenian philosopher of notable eloquence who offered a defense of Christianity to the same emperor. Later headings on the Syriac version of the Apology address it to Antoninus Pius, which has led modern scholars to debate whether the work was presented to Hadrian or to his successor. The ancient literary tradition, however, consistently places Aristides in the Hadrianic or immediately post-Hadrianic period and identifies him with Athens.

Almost nothing can be verified about his family, education, or the dates of his birth and death. He is uniformly presented as a philosopher of Athens who embraced Christianity. The designation of Athens and the title of Athenian philosopher are the unanimous testimony of the early sources, though independent evidence does not separate birth in the city from residence and teaching there. There is no reliable record of a wife, children, or membership in any later monastic or clerical order; he appears in the tradition as a Christian lay philosopher and writer. No ancient source names the place or circumstances of his death, and later notices that assign a death year in the 130s are inferences from the chronology of Hadrian’s reign rather than documented obituary data. He is not recorded as having held episcopal office, still less the see of Rome or a patriarchal throne.

His one surviving work, the Apology of Aristides, is among the earliest complete Christian apologies still extant. It argues from the order and motion of the cosmos to a single uncreated God, then surveys the errors of the barbarians, the Greeks, the Egyptians, and the Jews before presenting Christians as a people who know God through his Son and who live by a distinctive moral law: they do not commit adultery or bear false witness, they honor their parents, they love their neighbors, they rescue orphans, and they give thanks to God. The Greek original was long lost. A Syriac translation was identified in 1889 by J. Rendel Harris in a manuscript from the Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai. Armenian fragments had already been published in the 1870s. Large portions of the Greek text were subsequently recognized as having been embedded, with some adaptation, in the medieval Christian romance of Barlaam and Josaphat. These recoveries made it possible to study Aristides’ argument in close to its original form and to compare his ethnography of religions with later second-century apologists such as Justin Martyr.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 31 August at Athens, praising him as most celebrated for faith and wisdom and noting the treatises on the Christian religion that he presented to the emperor Hadrian. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church; Eastern Christian calendars likewise remember Aristides the Philosopher, commonly on the same date or on a nearby September commemoration depending on local usage. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his cult rests on the ancient martyrological and patristic tradition. No comprehensive list of patronages of places, professions, or causes is attached to him in the standard hagiographical sources.

Aristides’ historical importance lies less in a detailed personal biography, which the sources do not supply, than in the early date and distinctive method of his Apology. Writing from Athens in the second century, he offered the imperial court a concise, philosophically framed account of Christian monotheism and ethics, and he treated Christians as a new people or fourth category alongside barbarians, Greeks, and Jews. That text, recovered in the nineteenth century after centuries of being known only by title and brief patristic notice, remains a primary document for the study of early Christian apologetic, the self-understanding of the church in the Greek world, and the first literary encounters between the Christian movement and Roman imperial power.
