Biography

Short Description

Arno of Salzburg, whose name also appears as Arn in contemporary Latin sources, was a Bavarian cleric, abbot, diplomat, and scholar of the late eighth and early ninth centuries, and the first archbishop of Salzburg. He was born about the middle of the eighth century into a noble family in the Isengau, a district of the Duchy of Bavaria. He was educated at the cathedral school of Freising under Bishop Arbeo, then one of Bavaria’s principal learned churchmen, and was ordained to the priesthood. In the early 780s Charlemagne appointed him abbot of the royal Benedictine monastery of Saint-Amand (Elnon) in Flanders. That office drew him into the circle of Carolingian court clergy and into lasting contact with the scholars of the palace, above all Alcuin of York, whose correspondence with Arno is a major source for his career and opinions.

In 785 Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria named Arno bishop of Salzburg in succession to Virgil. After Charlemagne deposed Tassilo in 788 and brought Bavaria under direct Frankish rule, Arno became a chief instrument of the new ecclesiastical order. He had the estates and donations of the Salzburg church inventoried in the Notitia Arnonis, a property survey that fixed the see’s rights at the moment of dynastic change. In 798, at Charlemagne’s request, Pope Leo III raised Salzburg to metropolitan rank and conferred the pallium on Arno, making him the first archbishop of Salzburg and metropolitan of Bavaria, with suffragan authority over the Bavarian sees including Freising, Regensburg, Passau, and Säben. He travelled to Rome on more than one occasion. After the assault on Leo III in 799 he reported to the Frankish court on Roman affairs and took part in the diplomatic and synodal activity surrounding the events of 800.

As metropolitan he organized the church on the empire’s southeastern frontier. Following the Frankish wars against the Avars, he joined Patriarch Paulinus II of Aquileia in deliberations held in 796 on the Danube concerning the conversion of the Avars, at a time when Alcuin and others were warning against hasty or forced baptism. He promoted missionary work among Slavs and Avars in Carantania and the eastern Alpine lands and worked to establish Salzburg’s pastoral claim in those regions. Within Bavaria he presided over provincial synods in the first years of the ninth century, gatherings associated with Reisbach, Freising, and Salzburg that addressed clerical discipline, liturgical practice, and the government of the new province.

Arno was also a patron of learning. He fostered a scriptorium and library at Salzburg and belonged to the network of reformers who linked cathedral and monastic schools with Charlemagne’s court. His friendship with Alcuin, documented in numerous letters, shows a bishop concerned with doctrine, the education of clergy, and the moral condition of the church. The later ninth-century narrative known as the Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum, though written after his death, drew on the institutional memory of his episcopate when it described Bavaria’s conversion and Salzburg’s mission to the Slavs.

He died on 24 January 821 at Salzburg, after more than three decades as bishop and some two decades as archbishop. His tenure transformed Salzburg from a Bavarian bishopric into the metropolitan centre of the southeastern Carolingian church and left documentary and institutional foundations on which the medieval archdiocese rested. He is remembered as a founder of that see rather than as a canonized saint of the universal calendar; no securely attested medieval cult or papal canonization is attached to his name.
