Biography

Short Description

Arnoald (also rendered Arnold, Arnoaldus, or Arnuald) was a bishop of Metz in the Frankish kingdom of Austrasia during the early seventh century. Traditional catalogues of the bishops of Metz place him after Agilulf (Agiulf) and assign him an episcopate conventionally dated to about 601–609 or 611. Metz was a major ecclesiastical centre in the Moselle valley, and its bishops were figures of regional importance in the Merovingian church. Almost no contemporary documentation of Arnoald’s own acts survives; the dates attached to his tenure rest on the relative order of later episcopal lists rather than on dated charters or conciliar subscriptions that would fix his years with precision.

The principal early narrative source for the bishops of Metz is the Gesta episcoporum Mettensium composed by Paul the Deacon in the late eighth century. That work supplies a succession of names but little biographical substance for Arnoald. No letters, authentic charters, or other writings can be securely attributed to him. As a result, the historical figure remains obscure, known chiefly as an incumbent of the see rather than through recorded deeds, miracles, or a well-attested personal cult.

In the eighth and ninth centuries, genealogical texts produced in Carolingian circles sought to give Charlemagne’s ancestors a distinguished pedigree. These constructions present Arnoald as the son of a Gallo-Roman senator named Ansbertus and of Blithildis (sometimes described as a daughter of the Merovingian king Chlothar I). The same traditions often identify him as the father of Saint Arnulf of Metz, thereby linking the Carolingians both to the old senatorial aristocracy of Gaul and to the Merovingian royal house. Modern historians treat these claims with scepticism. They appear to be retrospective, politically useful fabrications rather than records grounded in seventh-century evidence, and any blood relationship between Bishop Arnoald and Arnulf of Metz remains unproven.

Whether Arnoald was married or had children cannot be established from sources that meet ordinary standards of historical verification. Clerical marriage still occurred in sixth- and seventh-century Gaul, so a married bishop would not have been unprecedented, yet no contemporary testimony confirms a wife or offspring. The places of his birth and death are likewise unknown; later writers conventionally place his death around 611. There is no early evidence of a liturgical cult or of miracles associated with him, and he does not occupy a secure place in the calendar of saints. His later importance derives far more from the genealogical role assigned to him in Carolingian family history than from anything that can be verified about his life and episcopate.
