Biography

Short Description

Arsacius of Nicomedia was a Christian hermit of the fourth century, Persian by birth, whose memory is preserved chiefly in the Ecclesiastical History of the fifth-century church historian Sozomen and in the Western martyrological tradition. Sozomen identifies him as a Persian who had formerly served in the palace of the emperor Licinius, the colleague and later rival of Constantine who governed the eastern provinces until his defeat in 324. After leaving that service, Arsacius withdrew from public life and took up a monastic existence at Nicomedia in Bithynia, then a major city of the eastern Roman Empire, a former imperial residence under Diocletian, and still an important administrative and ecclesiastical centre. The sources do not record his year of birth, the names of his parents, or the circumstances of his conversion, and nothing reliable is known of any family he may have had before he embraced the solitary life.

In the time of Licinius, Christians in the eastern army and court had faced renewed pressure, and later notices in the Roman Martyrology present Arsacius as one who abandoned military service in order to live as a hermit. He is described as a man of marked piety who became known for ascetic virtue and to whom contemporaries attributed miracles and the gift of prophecy. Later hagiographical tradition, especially in Eastern synaxaria, sometimes locates his cell in a tower outside Nicomedia; that topographic detail is not securely anchored in the earliest surviving account and should be treated with caution. What the early historians do attest is his reputation for holiness in and around the city in the middle decades of the fourth century, during the reign of Constantius II.

Arsacius’s name is inseparably linked with the great earthquake that destroyed much of Nicomedia on 24 August 358. That disaster is independently described by the historian Ammianus Marcellinus, who was not a Christian, and it also appears in the church histories of Socrates and Sozomen. Christian tradition holds that Arsacius foresaw the catastrophe and sought to warn the inhabitants of the city. According to later narrative elaborations, when his warnings were not generally heeded he returned to his place of prayer and was found dead in an attitude of supplication; some versions add that his dwelling escaped the ruin that overtook the city. The precise manner of his death cannot be verified from contemporary documents, but he is traditionally said to have died at Nicomedia in 358, in close connection with the earthquake. He was neither a martyr in the strict sense of dying under a formal persecution nor a holder of episcopal office.

Beyond this outline the historical record is sparse. Arsacius was not Bishop of Rome, nor patriarch of any of the great Eastern sees, nor the founder of a religious order. No spouse or children are named in the sources, and his later life was that of a monk and hermit. He was not the subject of a medieval papal canonization; like most saints of late antiquity he entered the calendars through local memory and martyrological compilation. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 16 August with the notice that at Nicomedia Saint Arsacius, having left military service, led a hermit’s life in the time of Licinius and became famous for his virtues and miracles. He does not appear as the patron of particular cities, trades, illnesses, or causes in the standard lists of patronage.

The figure who emerges from these scattered notices is therefore that of an obscure but consistent type in fourth-century Christian history: a man of Iranian origin who passed from imperial palatine or military service into Christian asceticism, who was remembered in Bithynia for prophetic insight, and whose death was associated with one of the most famous natural disasters of Constantius II’s reign. Later piety filled out the story with miraculous and edifying detail, but the core that can be traced to Sozomen and the martyrologies remains limited and should not be expanded by conjecture. His cult was never among the most prominent, yet the liturgical commemoration on 16 August has kept his name in the calendar of the Latin Church.
