Biography

Short Description

Arsenia, known in the world as Anna Mikhailovna Sebryakova, was born in 1833 in the sloboda of Mikhailovka in the Ust-Medveditsky district of the Don Cossack Host, then part of the Russian Empire. She belonged to a well-to-do family of the Don nobility; her father, Mikhail Vasilyevich Sebryakov, owned estates in the region and ensured that his daughter received a broad domestic education typical of the provincial gentry, encompassing literature, languages, and the accomplishments expected of a young noblewoman. Contemporary accounts of her youth stress an early gravity of character and a marked attraction to the Church, fasting, and prayer, rather than to the social round of Cossack high society. In her late teens she entered the Ust-Medveditsky Transfiguration Convent, a community situated on the Don near the stanitsa of Ust-Medveditskaya, thereby exchanging the prospect of marriage and estate life for the monastic path.

After a period of novitiate she was tonsured with the name Arsenia. In 1864 she was appointed abbess of the same monastery, an office she held until her death some forty years later. Her administration is credited with a substantial rebuilding and expansion of the convent. A large cathedral church in honor of the Transfiguration was erected, together with additional churches and chapels, cells, household buildings, workshops, an icon-painting studio, an infirmary, and a school that provided education for girls of the surrounding district. She combined this external activity with an insistence on the inner monastic tradition, particularly the practice of the Jesus Prayer and watchfulness of mind, in keeping with the hesychast current that had been renewed in Russian monasticism during the nineteenth century.

Those who left recollections of Abbess Arsenia portrayed her as a woman in whom cultured manners and strict asceticism were joined. She read widely in the ascetic fathers and in the Russian spiritual writers of her own century, among them Saint Ignatius (Brianchaninov). She offered spiritual counsel both to the sisters under her care and to lay visitors, and a body of her letters and instructions was preserved and later published. In the last years of her life she was afflicted by illness but remained the center of the community’s life. She died at the monastery in 1905 and was buried within its precincts.

The Ust-Medveditsky convent was closed in the Soviet period, its churches damaged, and the memory of its abbess survived chiefly in local tradition and in unpublished or little-circulated writings. After the return of the monastery to the Russian Orthodox Church in the late twentieth century, her grave and surviving texts attracted renewed attention. In 2016 the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church authorized her glorification as a locally venerated saint within the Volgograd Metropolia, and her relics are now venerated at the restored monastery in the town of Serafimovich (the former Ust-Medveditskaya) in Volgograd Oblast. Surviving sources for her life consist mainly of monastery records, her correspondence, memoirs of contemporaries, and later compilations prepared in connection with her canonization; a number of lesser chronological details of her early monastic years are not established with complete precision in the published historical literature.
