Biography

Short Description

The personal name Arsenij is the usual Slavic rendering of the Greek Arsenios, a name borne by many monks, bishops, and locally venerated saints in the Eastern Orthodox world, especially in Russian, Serbian, Ukrainian, and Greek lands. The Wikidata identifier Q23658414 does not correspond, in standard historical and hagiographical reference works, to any of the well-documented figures who share that name. Because the associated Wikipedia article is listed as unknown and no matching vita, episcopal catalogue entry, or synaxarion notice can be verified from reliable sources, a precise identification is not possible. Consequently every chronological and geographical particular—year of birth, year of death, places of birth, death, and burial—must be left blank rather than filled by analogy with a better-known homonym.

Among the more prominent bearers of the name are Arsenius the Great, the fourth- and fifth-century Desert Father who had earlier served at the imperial court in Constantinople; Arsenius of Corfu, a tenth-century bishop remembered as a wonder-worker; the Russian monastic founders Arseny of Konevets and Arseny of Komel, active in the northern forests in the late medieval period; Arsenije Sremac, the thirteenth-century Archbishop of Serbia; and the thirteenth-century Ecumenical Patriarch Arsenios Autoreianos. Later centuries add still other hierarchs and ascetics. None of these lives can be shown to belong to Q23658414. Conflating the present subject with any of them would violate the requirement to prefer an empty field over an unverified substitution.

In the absence of a securely attributed biography it is likewise impossible to state whether this Arsenij belonged to a particular religious order, whether he was married or remained celibate, or whether he had children. The statistical prevalence of the name among monks makes a monastic, celibate career plausible, yet plausibility is not documentation. No feast day appears in the major menologia in connection with this identifier, no patronage of places, professions, or causes is recorded, and no act of canonization or beatification by a named pope, patriarch, or synod can be cited. Eastern Orthodox custom ordinarily commemorates a monastic saint on the day of his repose, but without a documented date of death even that convention cannot be applied.

Historians and hagiographers must therefore treat the entry as an unresolved case. Further progress would depend on consulting the Wikidata item itself, any linked local church histories, episcopal lists, or unpublished menologia that may lie outside commonly available printed sources. Until such evidence is produced, the only responsible course is to record the masculine gender implied by the name, to note that the subject was not Bishop of Rome, and to leave every other field empty. This approach avoids both the invention of a fictitious life and the accidental transfer of facts that belong to another Arsenius.
