Biography

Short Description

Arsenio da Armo is an obscure historical figure whose name indicates a connection with Armo, a small comune in the province of Imperia in Liguria, northwestern Italy. The form of the name follows a long-standing Italian clerical and monastic convention in which a religious took, or was known by, the name of his place of origin. Beyond that geographic association, widely available historical and hagiographical sources yield almost no corroborated biographical detail.

No verified year of birth or death can be established. No reliable account identifies a specific religious order, although the toponymic style is typical of Franciscans, Capuchins, and similar mendicant communities. There is no evidence that he occupied any high ecclesiastical office. He was not Bishop of Rome, nor did he hold the rank of patriarch or catholicos in any Eastern church.

Nothing documented survives concerning marriage, children, or lay versus professed status. If he belonged to a religious order, celibacy would have been the expected discipline, but that status cannot be confirmed from accessible records. No feast day, list of patronages, beatification, or canonization appears in the principal Catholic martyrologies, Orthodox synaxaria, or standard catalogues of saints and blesseds.

Any local memory that may exist in Ligurian parish archives, unpublished convent chronicles, or oral tradition of the Imperia district has not entered the broader historical literature. Only the link with Armo and the inference of a religious identity can be stated with any confidence. Further particulars remain unknown.
