Biography

Short Description

Arseniy Komelskiy, known in English as Saint Arsenius of Komel, was a Russian Orthodox monk and founder of a wilderness monastery in the Vologda lands during the first half of the sixteenth century. Traditional accounts state that he was born in Moscow into a boyar family, identified in the menologion tradition as the Sakharusov (sometimes given as Sakharov) lineage. No reliable source records a year of birth. In his youth he entered the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, the principal monastic centre of Muscovy associated with Saint Sergius of Radonezh, where he received the monastic tonsure and was formed in the ascetic discipline of that house. Seeking a stricter eremitical life than a large lavra could easily provide, he later left for the remote Komel forests of the Vologda region, a landscape already associated with the hermit-saints of the Russian North.

In those forests he came into contact with Saint Cornelius of Komel, who had established a monastery there and who received Arsenius with charity. After a period of residence near Cornelius’s community, Arsenius, with his elder’s blessing, withdrew still farther into the woods and settled by the river Nurma, some versts from the existing house. There he built a cell and devoted himself to prayer, fasting, and manual labour. Disciples gradually gathered around him, and the hermitage developed into a coenobitic monastery dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, later known as the Arsenievo-Komelsky Monastery.

Hagiographical notices portray him as a strict ascetic who combined solitude with the practical cares of organising a monastic household in a harsh northern climate. He is said to have copied sacred books as well as to have shared in the physical work of clearing forest and raising the first church and cells. The community lived under conditions typical of sixteenth-century northern Russian monasteries: isolation, poverty, and eventual dependence on local or princely patronage as the house became established. Arsenius remained the spiritual father of the brotherhood until his death. Surviving accounts do not supply a detailed inner chronology of his abbacy, and many circumstantial episodes belong to the conventional language of Russian lives of the saints rather than to independently documented events.

He died on 24 August 1550 at the monastery he had founded and was buried there. The Russian Orthodox Church commemorates him as a prepodobny (venerable monastic saint) on 24 August, which falls on 6 September in the civil calendar used by churches that follow the Julian liturgical year; he is also numbered in the Synaxis of the Saints of Vologda. His monastery continued after his death, though like many northern houses it suffered in later centuries and was closed in the Soviet period. Beyond the menologion and later synaxaria, the historical record of his life remains thin: the year of birth is unknown, and no separate acts of papal or patriarchal office, marriage, or patronage in the Western sense are attached to his name.
