Biography

Short Description

According to medieval hagiographical tradition, Arthelais (also called Artellaide) was born in Constantinople in the mid-sixth century, a date commonly given as 544. Her father, Lucius, is described as an imperial proconsul, and her mother as Theoctista. The legend portrays her as a girl of striking beauty who from childhood gave herself to prayer and resolved to remain a virgin for God. No contemporary chronicle mentions her; what is known comes from a later vita connected with her cult in Benevento, and a careful historian must treat the story as pious legend rather than as a recoverable biography.

When she was about twelve, the emperor—named in the accounts as Justinian—sought to possess her. With her parents’ help she fled the capital by sea, accompanied by a nurse and a eunuch attendant. Robbers or pirates attacked the travelers and seized Arthelais. The vita states that an angel, often identified as Michael, delivered her and destroyed her captors. She came ashore at Sipontum in Apulia and made her way to Benevento, where an uncle named Narses is said to have exercised imperial authority. Later popular versions equate this uncle with Narses the eunuch general, Justinian’s commander in Italy in the 550s. That identification fits the chronology of the Gothic War’s aftermath but is difficult to reconcile with Narses’s status as a eunuch, and it should be regarded as legendary coloring.

In Benevento she lived quietly in piety. After some three years she fell ill with fever and died, the tradition holding that she was sixteen years old, about the year 560. She was buried in the city. A local cult grew at her tomb, and she came to be venerated as a virgin saint and a principal patron of Benevento. Because her legend turns on flight from a powerful suitor, capture, and miraculous rescue, the faithful have invoked her for kidnap victims, for those in exile, and against theft and abduction.

Her feast is observed on 3 March. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on that day as a virgin at Benevento. She was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; her cult rests on popular devotion and episcopal recognition in the pre-Congregation period. The historical existence of Arthelais cannot be confirmed independently of the hagiographical tradition, but that tradition has been continuous in Beneventan religious life since the Middle Ages.
