Biography

Short Description

The figure named Asclepius associated with Wikidata identifier Q28664336 cannot be identified with a fully documented historical life from standard classical, patristic, or hagiographical sources. The name itself (Greek Asklepios, Latin Aesculapius) belongs first to the ancient Greek hero and god of medicine. According to the dominant mythic tradition, he was the son of the god Apollo and Coronis, daughter of Phlegyas of the Lapiths in Thessaly. Pindar, the Homeric Hymn to Asclepius, Apollodorus, and Pausanias preserve variants of the story: Coronis was killed for infidelity; Apollo rescued the unborn child from her pyre; the infant was entrusted to the centaur Chiron on Mount Pelion, who taught him medicine and the hunt. Asclepius’s skill grew until he was reputed to restore the dead to life. Zeus, fearing disruption of the order of mortality, or at the complaint of Hades, struck him with a thunderbolt. Cult was thereafter paid to Asclepius as a healing god. The great sanctuary at Epidaurus became the most famous center; other major Asklepieia stood at Cos, Pergamon, Athens, and, after the third century BC, on the Tiber Island at Rome, where the god was received as Aesculapius. He was represented as a bearded man with a staff about which a serpent coiled. His spouse in myth was Epione; their children included Hygieia, Panacea, Iaso, Aceso, Aegle, Machaon, and Podalirius. None of these data yield a historical year of birth or death, and the figure lies outside Christian canonization.

In Christian late antiquity the personal name remained in circulation in Greek-speaking provinces. The ecclesiastical writer whose career can be followed with some confidence is Asclepas of Gaza (the name is also found as Asclepius in some renderings), bishop of Gaza in Palestine during the first half of the fourth century. He adhered to the Nicene definition of the faith. During the period of Arian political strength he was expelled from his see. The Council of Sardica, convened in 343, examined his case together with those of Athanasius of Alexandria and Marcellus of Ancyra and pronounced in favor of his restoration. Athanasius refers to him among the orthodox bishops who had suffered for the faith; the fifth-century church historians Socrates and Sozomen likewise notice him in their narratives of the controversy. Gaza was not a patriarchal see, and nothing indicates that Asclepas ever held the bishopric of Rome or the Coptic papacy of Alexandria. Dates of his birth, the beginning of his episcopate, and his death are not preserved. Whether he had been married before ordination is unknown. He does not appear with a universally observed feast in the principal recensions of the Roman Martyrology or the Byzantine synaxaria in a form that can be verified here.

Other hagiographical notices are weaker. Latin and Eastern martyrologies sometimes include an Asclepius or Aesculapius among groups of martyrs, frequently localized in Africa or the East and assigned to the general era of the Roman persecutions. These entries typically lack authentic passiones, named judges, or recoverable burial sites, and historians treat them as unconfirmed. No monastic founder or member of a named religious order called Asclepius can be securely attached to the given identifier. Consequently it is not possible to state a verified birth year, death year, city of birth or death, or place of burial. Patronages of medicine, physicians, and the sick, although historically linked to the pagan Asclepius and in Christian devotion to a number of physician-saints, cannot be documented as formally assigned to the subject of Q28664336. No pope or patriarch of that name is recorded in the standard lists of the Roman, Coptic, Constantinopolitan, Antiochene, Jerusalem, or East Syriac sees, and no act of canonization or beatification by a named pontiff can be cited.

The present account therefore remains deliberately incomplete. Where a field cannot be controlled from a reliable source it is left blank rather than filled by conjecture or by borrowing an office-taking year or a mythical genealogy. The name Asclepius evokes a long Mediterranean history of healing cult and, in the fourth century, at least one episcopal career bound up with the Nicene cause in Palestine. Beyond those limits the biographical record corresponding to the supplied identifier is not available.
