Biography

Saint Aspren, also called Asprenas or Asprenus and known in Italian as Sant'Aspreno or Sant'Asprenato, is honored as the first bishop of Naples. Local tradition places him in the first century and presents him as a disciple of the Apostle Peter. The chief narrative of his life is a medieval vita composed centuries after the events it describes; critical historians therefore regard the story as legendary in its details, even while acknowledging that the church of Naples is of very early origin and that Aspren stands at the head of the city's traditional list of bishops. He appears in the Roman Martyrology, which has long assigned him a feast on 3 August.

According to the received legend, Saint Peter, journeying from the East toward Rome, paused at Naples. There he encountered a woman named Candida, later venerated as Saint Candida the Elder. Peter healed her of an illness, converted her, and baptized her. Candida in turn brought to the apostle a fellow Neapolitan named Aspren, who was himself afflicted with a grave malady. Peter restored Aspren to health, instructed him in the Christian faith, and baptized him. Before continuing his journey to Rome, the apostle is said to have consecrated Aspren as bishop, thereby founding the episcopal see of Naples. Later piety identified the scene of these events with the church of San Pietro ad Aram, where an ancient altar was popularly believed to have been used by Peter himself.

Aspren is reported to have governed the Neapolitan church for twenty-three years, during which he converted many pagans and organized the first Christian community of the city. He is believed to have died in Naples in the later first century; some later hagiographical compilations give the year 79, a figure that cannot be confirmed from contemporary evidence. He was first buried in a cemetery outside the city walls. In subsequent centuries his relics were brought within the walls and eventually enshrined in the Cathedral of Naples, in a chapel that bears his name, near the early Christian basilica of Santa Restituta. A further church dedicated to him, San Aspreno al Porto, stands in the port area of Naples and testifies to the persistence of his cult.

Devotion to Aspren is thus primarily local and ancient. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 3 August as the bishop who is said to have been baptized by Saint Peter and to have been the first to rule the church of Naples. He is counted among the patron saints of the city, together with Saint Januarius and others. Popular piety has long invoked him against migraine and headaches. While almost nothing about his life can be verified by independent contemporary evidence, his figure has served for centuries as a symbol of the apostolic foundation claimed by the church of Naples, and his relics and churches remain part of the city's religious landscape.
