Biography

Short Description

Astrik, known also by the Latin names Anastasius, Astericus, Ascrick, and Astricus, was a Benedictine monk of the late tenth and early eleventh centuries whose career is bound up with the conversion of the Hungarians and the foundation of the Latin Church in the Carpathian Basin. Contemporary records of his birth and youth do not survive. Later medieval tradition, followed by modern reference works, describes him as originating in the Czech lands, most often associated with Bohemia, and as a monk of Břevnov Abbey near Prague, a community linked with Saint Adalbert of Prague. He belonged to the generation of Benedictine missionaries who carried monastic observance and Latin Christianity eastward as the Árpád princes Géza and Stephen turned their realm toward the papacy.

In the mid-990s Astrik was among the monks established at the monastery of Saint Martin on the hill of Pannonhalma in western Hungary, an abbey whose foundation is dated to 996 and which is the oldest continuously existing monastic house in the country. He became its first abbot. From that house he served the Hungarian court. When Stephen, having succeeded Géza, sought a royal crown and papal recognition of an independent Hungarian ecclesiastical hierarchy, he sent Astrik to Rome as envoy to Pope Sylvester II. The embassy, placed by tradition around the year 1000, obtained a crown and authorization for the organization of dioceses. Hungarian hagiographical tradition, especially the early-twelfth-century Hartvik legend of Saint Stephen, holds that Astrik himself crowned Stephen as the first King of Hungary, an event later chroniclers dated to Christmas of 1000 or 1 January 1001.

After the coronation Astrik was raised to the episcopate. The identity of his see remains debated. One strand of tradition, reflected in the Hartvik legend, presents him as the first Archbishop of Esztergom and primate of Hungary. Other reconstructions, favored by some modern historians, identify him as Archbishop of Kalocsa, the second metropolitan see of the kingdom. In either reconstruction he was a principal organizer of the early Hungarian church, involved in the foundation of bishoprics, the introduction of Benedictine monasticism, and the orientation of the new kingdom toward Rome rather than the German imperial church. He remained a counselor of King Stephen and appears in later sources as a central figure of the first Christian generation in Hungary.

Astrik died in the first half of the eleventh century. Surviving sources do not record an exact year; modern works conventionally place his death around 1030 or in the following decade. The place of his death and of his burial is unknown. He was venerated as a saint in medieval Hungary, particularly in Benedictine and archiepiscopal circles, and his feast is kept on 12 November. Because nearly all narrative details derive from texts written a century or more after his lifetime, and because the names Astrik and Anastasius may conceivably refer to more than one person, historians treat many biographical particulars with caution. What can be affirmed with reasonable confidence is his role as Benedictine abbot of Pannonhalma, papal envoy, and founding archbishop in the Christianization of Hungary.
