Biography

Short Description

Saint Athanasia of Aegina was a ninth-century Byzantine abbess and wonderworker, venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. She was born on the island of Aegina in the Saronic Gulf, then part of the Byzantine Empire and repeatedly exposed to Arab naval raids on the Aegean. Her parents, named in the surviving Life as Niketas and Irene, were pious Christians of comfortable standing. From youth she was drawn to prayer and an ascetic life, but at about the age of sixteen her family arranged a marriage. Only sixteen days after the wedding her husband was killed in an attack by Arab raiders. Athanasia wished to enter monastic life, yet an imperial decree then in force required young widows of childbearing age to remarry, a measure meant to offset population losses from warfare. She therefore contracted a second marriage.

Her second husband, described as a military man, was in time persuaded by her example and counsel to receive the monastic tonsure. Freed to follow her own vocation, Athanasia turned her household into a convent dedicated to the Mother of God and gathered other women into community. She served as abbess, supporting the nuns by the labor of her hands, especially weaving, and giving the proceeds to the poor. Contemporary hagiography portrays her as practicing severe fasting, long vigils, and constant charity, and as possessing a reputation for spiritual counsel and healings attributed to her prayers. The community lived under the pressures of continued raids on Aegina, which shaped both its poverty and its mobility.

Athanasia later spent a prolonged period, traditionally nearly seven years, in Constantinople. There she resided in a monastic house and was sought out by the faithful; tradition associates her stay with the years after the restoration of icons in 843 and with honor shown her at court in the time of Empress Theodora. The nuns of her convent on Aegina eventually called her back, and she returned to the island to resume leadership of the community. She is said to have foretold her death.

According to her Life she died on 14 August and was buried at her monastery. Miracles, including healings connected with oil from her tomb and the reported fragrance of her relics, were recorded soon afterward. An anonymous Life, probably composed by a member of her community not long after her death, is a principal source for women’s monasticism and daily conditions in the ninth-century Aegean. Later tradition places her death in 860. She is commemorated on 18 April in the Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendar. No formal papal or patriarchal act of canonization is recorded; her cult arose from local veneration on Aegina and entered the wider Byzantine synaxaria. Precise year of birth is not given in the early sources.
