Biography

Short Description

Athanasius the Athonite, known in Greek as Athanasios ho Athonites and sometimes called Athanasios of Trebizond, was a tenth-century Byzantine monk who organized cenobitic monasticism on Mount Athos and founded the Monastery of Great Lavra. He was born in Trebizond (Trapezus) on the Black Sea, in the Byzantine Empire, in the early tenth century; his baptismal name was Abraham. Orphaned while still a child, he was raised by a kinswoman who lived as a nun and was given a careful Christian upbringing. As a youth he was sent to Constantinople, where he studied the secular curriculum of grammar, rhetoric, and philosophy and for a period taught students himself. Contemporary accounts describe him as learned, austere, and physically unimposing.

In the capital he encountered Michael Maleinos, abbot of the monastery of Kyminas on Mount Kyminas in Bithynia and uncle of the general Nikephoros Phokas. Abraham followed Maleinos to Kyminas, received the monastic tonsure, and took the name Athanasius. He advanced rapidly in the ascetic life and became closely associated with Nikephoros, who cherished the intention of becoming a monk. Seeking a stricter solitude and wishing to avoid the prominence that his connection with Phokas brought him, Athanasius left Bithynia for Mount Athos, then a remote peninsula in Macedonia inhabited chiefly by hermits and small groups of ascetics rather than by large coenobia. He lived there in concealment for a time, even taking work as a copyist, until his identity became known.

When Nikephoros Phokas became emperor in the early 960s, he declined to abandon the throne for the habit but instead endowed Athanasius with funds, privileges, and artisans to raise a great communal monastery. The Great Lavra was established near the southeastern tip of Athos, with a katholikon, monastic cells, a refectory, defensive works, a hospital, and water installations. Athanasius gave the house a written rule drawing on the Studite tradition of Constantinople and on the customs of Kyminas, thereby transplanting organized cenobitic life to the Holy Mountain. Imperial chrysobulls confirmed the Lavra’s property and the special status of Athos. The new foundation attracted many monks, and other monasteries were soon founded on similar lines.

The introduction of a large, disciplined coenobium was not universally welcomed. Some of the older Athonite hermits regarded communal buildings, estates, and imperial patronage as a threat to the eremitical character of the mountain and opposed Athanasius, at times bitterly. With continuing support from the court—under Nikephoros II Phokas and his successors—he maintained the Lavra’s cenobitic order and helped to shape the emerging federal institutions of Athos, including arrangements later reflected in imperial typika for the whole mountain. He remained abbot of the Lavra for decades, combining administration with a reputation for personal austerity and spiritual direction.

According to the tenth- and eleventh-century Lives written by monks of his community, Athanasius died when a vault or cupola of a church then under construction at the Lavra collapsed, killing him together with several of the brethren. The Church commemorates him on 5 July; the precise year of the accident is not securely established in the sources and is variously placed around the year 1000. He was buried at the Great Lavra, where his relics have continued to be venerated. Later Orthodox tradition regards him as the principal founder of the monastic republic of Mount Athos, which became the foremost centre of Eastern Orthodox monasticism. He is honoured as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and, as a figure of the undivided Church of the first millennium, is also recognized in Western calendars.
