Biography

Short Description

Athenagoras of Athens was a Greek Christian philosopher and apologist of the later second century, conventionally associated with Athens and with the intellectual world of the Roman Empire under Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. Almost nothing about his life is documented by contemporary witnesses. He is styled an Athenian in the manuscript tradition of his principal work, and later Christian writers present him as a trained philosopher, often of Platonist formation, who became a Christian. Precise years of birth and death are not preserved in any ancient source; modern handbooks sometimes print approximate figures, but these are estimates rather than recorded dates. A notice transmitted under the name of the fifth-century church historian Philip of Side claimed that Athenagoras had intended to write against Christianity, was converted in the course of that project, and then became the first head of the Catechetical School of Alexandria and the teacher of Clement. That report is generally treated as legendary or at least untrustworthy: there is no second-century evidence that Athenagoras taught in Alexandria, and the succession of the Alexandrian school cannot be securely traced back to him.

His one work of undisputed authenticity is the Embassy (or Plea) for the Christians, in Greek Presbeia peri Christianōn, addressed to the emperors Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. Internal indications, especially the imperial titulature, place the composition in the later 170s, most often around 176–177. The Embassy answers the stock pagan charges of atheism, cannibalism (so-called Thyestean banquets), and incest (Oedipean unions). Athenagoras argues that Christians are not atheists but worshippers of the one God; that they refuse idolatry and imperial cult without being enemies of the state; and that their moral discipline, including sexual restraint and refusal of infanticide and gladiatorial spectacle, is stricter than that of their accusers. He appeals to Greek poets and philosophers as partial witnesses to monotheism, while insisting that Christian doctrine surpasses pagan theology. The treatise is notable among second-century apologies for its relatively measured tone, its Middle Platonic vocabulary, and an early attempt to speak of Father, Son (the Logos), and Holy Spirit as distinct yet one God—an important witness to developing Trinitarian language before Nicaea.

A second treatise, On the Resurrection of the Dead, has been transmitted under Athenagoras’s name. It defends the resurrection of the body against philosophical objections (for example, that matter is recycled among many bodies, or that resurrection is unworthy of a spiritual religion) and argues that God’s power and justice require the restoration of the whole human person. Modern scholarship is divided on authorship: some accept the work as his, others date it later or regard it as anonymous, noting differences of style and of philosophical emphasis from the Embassy. Whether or not it is by the same hand, it belongs to the same milieu of Greek Christian engagement with Hellenic philosophy in the late second or early third century. No other genuine writings of Athenagoras survive; fragments or titles sometimes attached to him in later catalogues are not independently verified.

Athenagoras is not known to have been a bishop, monk, or holder of any patriarchal or papal office. He appears in the sources as a Christian lay philosopher writing on behalf of the churches, not as a member of a religious order and not as a figure with a documented family life. No reliable ancient authority records a spouse, children, place of death, or burial. He was not the subject of an early cult with a fixed feast in the principal martyrologies, and later formal processes of beatification or canonization do not apply to him. His historical importance lies in the Embassy as one of the more philosophically sophisticated Greek apologies of the ante-Nicene period, in his use of contemporary philosophy to defend Christian monotheism and morals, and in the glimpse he affords of how educated converts in the Greek East articulated faith in the one God, the Logos, and (if the second treatise is his) the resurrection of the body. Later tradition sometimes confused him with other men named Athenagoras, including much later ecclesiastical figures; the second-century Athenian apologist must be kept distinct from those namesakes.
