Biography

Short Description

Saint Athracht (also known as Attracta, Adhracht, or Araght) was an Irish virgin and monastic foundress of the fifth or sixth century. She is principally associated with Killaraght (Cill Athrachta, meaning the church of Athracht) in County Sligo, near Lough Gara in the province of Connacht. No contemporary written record of her life survives. Her cult is attested by the early ninth-century Martyrology of Tallaght and related Irish martyrologies, which commemorate her on 11 August, showing that she was already venerated in the Irish church by that time. Later medieval hagiography, including a Latin Life of uncertain date, supplies a largely legendary biography that historians treat with caution.

According to that later tradition, Athracht was of noble Connacht or north-western Irish birth and refused marriage in order to live as a consecrated virgin. Some versions of her Life claim that she received the veil from Saint Patrick, thereby placing her in the fifth century; other indications and the general character of such claims have led scholars to allow that she may have lived in the sixth century instead. She is credited with establishing a women's religious community and a hospice for travellers at Killaraght, on a route of some importance beside Lough Gara. The hospice is said in later sources to have endured for many centuries, and her name remained attached to Christian hospitality in the district.

Local devotion to Athracht was concentrated in County Sligo and adjacent parts of County Roscommon. Holy wells dedicated to her became places of pilgrimage and were associated with healing. She is honoured as co-patron of the Diocese of Achonry, together with Saint Nathy, and as patron of the parish of Killaraght. Churches and schools in Ireland and among the Irish diaspora have been placed under her name. Because the surviving Life is late and legendary, and because no early annalistic obit records her death, her exact dates of birth and death, her parentage, and the place of her burial cannot be verified. She is remembered as an early Irish virgin foundress of Connacht, linked in tradition with monastic life, care for wayfarers, and a lasting local cult.
