Biography

Short Description

Saint Atto, also recorded as Attho, Attone, or Acto, was a twelfth-century Vallombrosan monk and bishop of Pistoia in Tuscany. Later hagiographical tradition, repeated in many modern notices, holds that he was born about 1070 at Badajoz in Extremadura and that he belonged to a Spanish family. Contemporary charters and narratives do not confirm his birthplace or parentage, so the Spanish origin remains a received tradition rather than a fact established by twelfth-century evidence. It is better attested that he entered the Order of Vallombrosa, the Benedictine reform founded in the eleventh century by Saint John Gualbert in the mountains east of Florence, and that he was shaped by that congregation's emphasis on austerity, opposition to simony, and support for the Gregorian reform of the Church.

According to the memory of his order he became abbot of Vallombrosa in the early twelfth century and thus head of a family of houses already spreading through Tuscany. In the mid-1130s he was made bishop of Pistoia. The see lay in a landscape of emerging communes, imperial and papal claims, and continuing efforts to enforce clerical celibacy and free ecclesiastical appointments from lay control. The act for which he is most clearly remembered is the obtaining of a relic of the Apostle James the Greater from Santiago de Compostela and its translation to Pistoia. Local tradition places this in the 1140s. The relic gave the city a distinguished apostolic cult, encouraged pilgrimage, and tied Pistoia to one of the principal shrines of medieval Latin Christendom. The translation is among the more solidly grounded episodes of his life because it left liturgical, civic, and artistic traces.

Other aspects of his episcopate fit the profile of a monk-bishop of the reform generation: concern for the discipline of the clergy, support of monastic institutions, and the ordinary government of a cathedral church in a growing Tuscan town. Later writers have occasionally ascribed historical or hagiographical works to him. Such ascriptions require caution, both because the evidence is thin and because he is easily confused with Atto of Vercelli, the prolific tenth-century bishop and canonist. No substantial, critically secured literary corpus can be assigned to the bishop of Pistoia with confidence.

He died at Pistoia on 22 May. Reference works commonly give the year as 1153, while some older Catholic encyclopedic accounts give 1155. He was buried in his episcopal city and came to be honoured as a saint in the local calendar, with a feast on 22 May. A formal papal canonization in the later centralized sense is not clearly documented; his cult belongs to the medieval pattern of diocesan and popular recognition subsequently registered in martyrologies. Because so much of the story of his youth depends on late tradition, a historically careful portrait must keep the relatively secure outline of his abbacy, episcopate, and the James relic distinct from the less certain details of his birth and from later legendary expansions.
