Biography
Attilio Giordani was born in Milan on 3 February 1913 and spent his childhood and youth in that city. He came into lasting contact with the Salesians of Don Bosco, whose oratories formed his religious and educational outlook. He did not enter a religious institute; he remained a layman for his whole life and later became a Salesian Cooperator, belonging to the association Saint John Bosco founded for lay people who share the Salesian mission in ordinary family and working life. From early adulthood he gave himself to catechesis and to the animation of children and adolescents, combining prayer, cheerfulness, and personal accompaniment in the style of the Salesian oratory.
During the Second World War he served in the Italian armed forces. After the war he married Noemi; they had three children. Giordani earned his living as an office employee in Milan while giving his free time to the oratory, where he was remembered for availability, humor, and a practical charity. He helped organize games, theatricals, summer experiences, and Christian formation, trying to make the oratory a family-like environment. Later accounts of his life treat his marriage and fatherhood not as a private backdrop but as part of the same path of holiness as his youth apostolate.
In 1972 he and his wife went to Brazil. One of their sons had been serving as a volunteer with the Salesians in the missions; the parents went in his place so that he could return to Italy. They joined Salesian pastoral work at Campo Grande in Mato Grosso do Sul. There Giordani took up again the same oratory ministry among young people, in a setting far from Milan. On 12 December 1972, after speaking to a gathering of youth, he suffered a heart attack and died in Campo Grande. He was fifty-nine.
A reputation for holiness spread among those who had known him in Italy and in Brazil. A canonical cause examined his life. Pope Francis approved his beatification, which was celebrated in Milan on 30 October 2022, with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro presiding as papal delegate. Blessed Attilio Giordani is presented in the Church as an example of lay Salesian spirituality, Christian family life, and missionary availability. His liturgical memorial is kept on 12 December, the anniversary of his death.
