Biography

Prince August Franciszek Maria Anna Józef Kajetan Czartoryski was born in Paris on 2 August 1858, into one of the leading families of the Polish aristocracy then living in exile. His father, Prince Władysław Czartoryski, was a central figure of the Polish émigré community in France and the moving spirit of the Hôtel Lambert, which served as a political and cultural headquarters for Poles after the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the failed uprisings of the nineteenth century. His mother, María Amparo Muñoz y Borbón, Countess of Vista Alegre, was the daughter of Queen Maria Christina of Spain and her morganatic husband Agustín Fernando Muñoz. She died of tuberculosis in 1864, when August was still a child. The same disease later marked his own short adult life and repeatedly interrupted his studies and religious formation.

Raised between Paris and the family’s Polish connections, August received the education expected of a prince of his rank and was widely regarded as a possible dynastic match. His father hoped he would marry and continue the Czartoryski line. August, however, became increasingly drawn to the priesthood. A meeting in Paris in the early 1880s with Saint John Bosco, founder of the Salesians, confirmed a vocation that ran directly against family expectation. Prince Władysław opposed the choice, both because he feared the extinction of his branch of the house and because he considered a recently founded congregation of poor priests an unsuitable state for a Czartoryski. August persisted. He entered the Salesians of Don Bosco in the later 1880s, made religious profession, and prepared for ordination while already ill with tuberculosis, spending periods of formation in Salesian houses in Italy, including on the Ligurian coast, where the climate was thought to ease his condition.

He was ordained a priest on 2 April 1892. His active ministry lasted little more than a year. Weakened by consumption, he was sent to Alassio in Liguria. There he died on 8 April 1893, at the age of thirty-four. He had lived as a professed religious and priest only briefly, having set aside princely rank, marriage, and the political role his family had intended for him.

Devotion to him grew among Salesians and among Poles who saw in the prince-priest a model of detachment from privilege. A cause for beatification was introduced in the twentieth century. Pope John Paul II beatified him in Saint Peter’s Square on 25 April 2004, presenting him as an example of a young man who chose evangelical poverty and consecrated life over dynastic duty. His liturgical memorial is kept on 8 April. He has not been canonized.
