Biography

Short Description

Auguste Chapdelaine was a nineteenth-century French Catholic missionary priest of the Paris Foreign Missions Society who was martyred in southern China. He was born in 1814 in La Rochelle-Normande, a village in the Manche department of Normandy, into a rural family. After studies for the priesthood he was ordained for the Diocese of Coutances and spent several years in parish ministry in France. In the early 1850s he entered the Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris and was assigned to the China mission, reaching the interior province of Guangxi in the mid-1850s after language study and travel via the south China coast.

Guangxi was not among the ports opened to foreigners by the treaties of the 1840s, and missionary work there was illegal under Qing law and carried out in secret. Chapdelaine ministered to existing Chinese Catholic communities, traveling discreetly and administering the sacraments. The region was unstable, coinciding with the Taiping Rebellion and with rising tension between the Qing court and Western powers over trade, diplomacy, and the legal status of Christian missions. Local officials often treated foreign clergy as politically dangerous as well as religiously subversive.

In 1856 he was arrested by the magistrate at Xilin in Guangxi. Missionary and later hagiographical accounts describe severe torture, including beatings and confinement in a cage. He died on 29 February 1856; reports differ on whether he expired under torture or was subsequently beheaded. French diplomats treated the killing of a French national as a casus belli and, together with other grievances, used it to justify France’s participation alongside Britain in the Second Opium War. Chinese official records of the period presented the case as the lawful suppression of an illegal foreigner.

Chapdelaine, known in Chinese as Ma Lai, was beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1900 among a group of China mission martyrs and was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 1 October 2000 as one of the one hundred twenty Martyr Saints of China. His liturgical commemoration is observed with that group on 9 July. Historical writing continues to distinguish the religious narrative of his death from the diplomatic use made of it in mid-nineteenth-century Sino-Western conflict.
