Biography

Short Description

Augustin Yu Chin-gil (also rendered Augustine Yu Jin-gil) was a Korean Catholic layman and martyr of the Joseon period. He was born in 1791 in Seoul. He belonged to the social world of government interpreters (yeokgwan), a hereditary specialist class whose members handled Chinese, the language of diplomacy, classical learning, and written administration in Korea. Yu Chin-gil himself served as an official interpreter. In a kingdom where Catholicism had been prohibited since the late eighteenth century, Catholic doctrine nevertheless circulated in Chinese books brought from Beijing. Through such texts Yu Chin-gil encountered the faith, sought out the clandestine Catholic community, received instruction, and was baptized with the name Augustine.

Nineteenth-century Korean Catholicism was unusual in missionary history because it had taken root largely through lay initiative. Korean scholars first met Catholic works in China; communities formed at home with little or no resident clergy for long periods; and leading Catholics repeatedly tried to obtain priests by sending petitions and envoys toward Beijing and, through that channel, toward Rome. Yu Chin-gil’s Chinese literacy and court-related work placed him among the educated Catholics of the capital who could read doctrine, correspond, and support an underground church. French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, including Bishop Laurent-Joseph-Marius Imbert and Fathers Pierre-Philibert Maubant and Jacques-Honoré Chastan, entered Korea in the mid-1830s after years of such lay effort. The community remained small, illegal, and exposed to sudden crackdowns.

The Gihae persecution of 1839 was one of the most severe of those crackdowns. The Joseon court treated Catholicism as a threat to Confucian hierarchy and as a possible opening for foreign influence. Arrests, torture, and executions followed in Seoul and the provinces. Yu Chin-gil was seized, interrogated, and pressed to recant and to betray other Catholics. He refused to apostatize. On 22 September 1839 he was beheaded in Seoul at the execution ground associated with the Small West Gate (Seosomun), where many of the 1839 martyrs died. He was about forty-eight years old. Contemporary Catholic records remember him as a lay witness of the 1839 generation rather than as a cleric or member of a religious order.

He was among the Korean martyrs beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925, a group drawn mainly from the persecutions of 1839 and 1846. Pope John Paul II canonized him in Seoul on 6 May 1984 together with 102 other Korean martyrs, during an apostolic visit that presented the group as foundational for the Korean Church. The Catholic Church commemorates them together on 20 September as the Martyrs of Korea. Individual patronages attached specifically to Yu Chin-gil are not securely documented in the standard hagiographical lists; his historical profile remains that of a Seoul interpreter-convert who died in the Gihae persecution and was later raised to the altars with his companions.
