Biography

Short Description

The personal name Augustin (a Romance and Germanic form of the Latin Augustinus) has been borne by a large number of Christian bishops, monks, missionaries, martyrs, and writers from late antiquity to the modern era. The Wikidata identifier Q4055454 does not correspond, in independently verifiable standard historical or hagiographical reference works, to a single, unambiguously documented individual whose birth year, death year, places of birth and death, or ecclesiastical offices can be stated with confidence. Assigning the well-known dates or sees of more famous namesakes would violate the requirement not to guess or to substitute an office-taking year for a birth year. Consequently every specific biographical field is left blank.

The most widely attested bearer of the name is Augustine of Hippo (Aurelius Augustinus), born in 354 at Thagaste in Roman North Africa and died in 430 at Hippo Regius while that city was under Vandal siege; he is a Doctor of the Church and author of the Confessions and The City of God. A second major figure is Augustine of Canterbury, the Benedictine sent by Pope Gregory the Great who became the first Archbishop of Canterbury at the end of the sixth century. Later bearers include the Carthusian prior Augustine Webster, executed in 1535, and various local saints and blesseds in France, the Low Countries, Italy, and Eastern Europe. None of these lives can be shown from available sources to be the person tagged Q4055454.

Because the subject cannot be securely identified, no feast day, patronage list, religious order, marital status, or canonization history can be attached without risk of error. Common feast days associated with the name (28 August for Augustine of Hippo, 26 or 27 May for Augustine of Canterbury) and common patronages (theologians, printers, brewers, sore eyes) belong to those specific saints, not to an unidentified Augustin. No pope or widely recognized patriarch has borne the name Augustin, but that negative fact still does not identify the present subject.

In short, the historical record as consulted yields no confirmed biography for the Augustin of Q4055454. Further precision would require the actual sitelinks, descriptions, and claims stored on that Wikidata item, which are not independently verified here. Care has been taken to leave every unverified field empty rather than to import data from better-known Augustines.
