Biography

Augustine Fangi, also known as Agostino Fangi or Augustine of Biella, was born in 1430 in Biella, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, then under the Duchy of Savoy. Later accounts describe his family as prosperous and opposed to a religious vocation, having intended him for a secular career. Against that opposition he entered the Dominican convent in his native city at about the age of fifteen, joining the Order of Preachers in the mid-fifteenth century. He was formed in the observant current of the order, which in that period emphasized stricter community life, poverty, and preaching.

As a Dominican priest he became known for austerity, humility, and a reputation for holiness that spread through convents of northern Italy. He served as prior of several houses of the order, including those at Biella and at Soncino in Lombardy. In these offices he was associated with the fifteenth-century Dominican Observant reform, which sought to restore primitive fervor. Contemporary and later accounts present him as a sought-after confessor and spiritual counsellor, and devotees credited him with gifts of prophecy and of reading hearts.

Hagiographical tradition already in his lifetime treated Fangi as a miracle worker. Stories transmitted after his death attribute to him healings and other extraordinary graces, including the restoration of life to a drowned child so that the child might be baptized. Such narratives belong to the pious literature of his cult and cannot be independently verified from non-hagiographical sources. His reputation for wonder-working continued after death and helped sustain local devotion in Piedmont and Lombardy.

Fangi died on 22 July 1493 at the Dominican convent of Valenza in Piedmont and was buried there. Decades later, when the church that housed his tomb was demolished, his body was reported to have been found incorrupt, an event that further encouraged veneration. A local cult developed around his relics. Pope Pius IX confirmed that long-standing cult in the nineteenth century, thereby beatifying him. He has not been canonized. His liturgical memorial is kept on 22 July, the anniversary of his death, though some Dominican calendars have transferred it to avoid coincidence with the feast of Saint Mary Magdalene. He remains a blessed of the Catholic Church, remembered chiefly in Biella and among the Dominicans of northern Italy.
