Biography

Short Description

Augustine Phan Viết Huy, known in Vietnamese as Augustinô Phan Viết Huy, was a Catholic layman and imperial soldier in nineteenth-century Tonkin who was put to death for refusing to apostatize during the persecutions of the Nguyễn dynasty. Traditional Catholic sources give his year of birth as 1795 and name his native place as the village of Tiên Chu in the Bắc Ninh region of northern Vietnam. He grew up in a Christian community that had existed in Tonkin since the early modern missions, and as an adult he served in the army of the emperor, an occupation that later exposed him directly to the court's campaign against Christianity.

From 1833, Emperor Minh Mạng issued edicts that sought to eradicate the Christian religion in Đại Nam. Churches were to be destroyed, European missionaries hunted down, and Vietnamese Catholics compelled to trample a crucifix as a public sign of apostasy. Those who refused were subject to imprisonment, torture, and execution. Christian soldiers were regarded as particularly suspect, because their baptism was taken as a form of divided loyalty. Augustine Phan Viết Huy was denounced as a believer, arrested, and confined in Hanoi. Accounts preserved for his later beatification state that officials pressed him to recant and that he would not trample the cross or deny his faith, even when threatened with death.

He was condemned and executed in Hanoi on 12 June 1839. Martyrologies record that the method of execution was strangulation, then a customary capital sentence in the empire. He was about forty-four years old. His martyrdom formed part of a wider sequence of executions of Vietnamese Catholics and foreign missionaries in Tonkin in the late 1830s, under the same imperial policy that produced many of the other saints later grouped with him.

The memory of these deaths was kept by the local Church and by missionary congregations. Augustine Phan Viết Huy was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on 27 May 1900 among a group of sixty-four martyrs of Vietnam. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him in Saint Peter's Square together with one hundred and sixteen companions, inscribed in the Martyrology as Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions, commonly called the Vietnamese Martyrs. Their collective feast is kept on 24 November. Little else that is independently verifiable survives about his family circumstances, education, or inner life; the historical record, such as it is, presents him as a lay soldier of Tonkin who chose death rather than renounce the Christian faith.
