Biography

Short Description

Aurelia of Regensburg, also known as Aurelia of Ratisbon, was a Christian recluse of the late tenth and early eleventh centuries, venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. She lived as an anchoress in association with the Benedictine abbey of Saint Emmeram in Regensburg, in Bavaria. Contemporary documentary evidence for her life is scarce, and much of what later hagiographers related about her origins belongs to legend rather than to independently verified history. The date of her death is traditionally given as 1027, and her feast has been observed on 15 October, treated as her dies natalis.

According to a tradition that circulated in later medieval and early modern accounts, Aurelia was of high, possibly royal, Frankish birth. Some versions identify her as a daughter of Hugh Capet, the first king of the Capetian dynasty in West Francia. In this telling she refused an arranged marriage, left her homeland, and made her way to Bavaria, where she sought a life of prayer and seclusion. Historians treat this royal parentage as unproven: Hugh Capet’s known children do not include a daughter of this name in reliable genealogies, and the story may have been shaped to enhance the prestige of her cult. What can be said with more confidence is that a woman named Aurelia lived as a consecrated recluse at Saint Emmeram’s.

Later tradition further relates that Wolfgang, bishop of Regensburg (died 994), who had close ties to Saint Emmeram’s Abbey, authorized or established her enclosed cell and served as her spiritual guide. If the report that she remained in reclusion for some five decades is accepted, her enclosure would have begun in Wolfgang’s lifetime and continued long after his death, through the early decades of the eleventh century. As an inclusa she would have occupied a small dwelling attached to the monastic church, participating in the liturgical life of the abbey from behind a window or grille while remaining withdrawn from the world. Such recluses were a recognized form of consecrated life in Ottonian Germany, and her way of life is therefore historically plausible even where personal details cannot be corroborated.

Aurelia is said to have died at Regensburg in 1027 and to have been buried at Saint Emmeram’s Abbey. Her tomb became a focus of local veneration. She is commemorated as a Benedictine recluse and saint; her cult remained essentially regional, centered on Regensburg and the abbey that housed her grave. She was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type, and no extensive list of patronages is securely attached to her name. Distinguishing her from other saints named Aurelia, especially Aurelia of Strasbourg, whose feast also falls in mid-October, requires care, as later calendars and popular accounts have sometimes conflated them.
